    The Health Sciences Services' (HSS), Scientific Instruments (SI) unit has an opportunity for a Biomedical Electronics Lead.


    SI provides services that support patient care, laboratory and research equipment for university, state, federal and other publicly funded agencies.

    Services include technology management, regulatory compliance, preventive maintenance, routine or emergency repairs, and design and prototype development. SI is a self-sustaining unit. Major customers include UWMC-Montlake, Laboratory Medicine, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW Physicians Neighborhood Clinics, Harborview Medical Center and UWMC-Northwest.


    The Lead will perform senior-level Biomedical Electronics work such as troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing, calibrating, constructing, and designing a variety of analog, digital and electromechanical instruments used in healthcare, clinical laboratories, and medical research.

    Oversee the work of BMETs and assist management with recalls, employee training, managing shop instruments and leading special projects.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Under general supervision, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, install, test, and calibrate basic clinical, laboratory and medical research equipment.


    Under general supervision, independently direct the daily operations of services provided to UW Medicine's outpatient clinics and assist management with special assignments.


    Serve as a senior-level BMET by troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing, and calibrating basic, moderate, and complex and/or highly specialized clinical, laboratory and medical research equipment.


    Typical Leadership Tasks (60%):

    • Regularly assign and review the work of other BMETs.
    • Regularly performs training to BMETs on proper documentation, customer service, and equipment maintenance.
    • Attend all leadership meetings.
    • 2 times a week lead huddle and act as Lead on Call
    • 1-2 times a week report to satellite shop(s) to work and lead BMETs
    • Review and approve technician purchases
    • Attend and assist with leading all shop meetings and technical training sessions.
    • Assists Supervisors with onboarding new BMETs.
    • Advises clinic administration on best practices related to medical equipment purchasing, use, preventive maintenance, repair, and replacement.
    • Assist Compliance Supervisor with weekly medical equipment recalls.
    • Maintain employee training records and periodically review to ensure compliance with state, federal and University requirements related to biohazard, radiation safety, etc.
    • Identify training gaps and report to Supervisor.
    • Assist Training and Resource Supervisor with maintaining an accurate inventory of test instruments and schedule annual calibrations.
    • Assist Systems supervisor with maintaining an accurate equipment inventory
    • Manage major projects such as new clinic startups, moves, expansions, etc.

    Typical Senior-Level Tasks (40%):

    • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electronic, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic device malfunctions to the system, device, assembly, or component level as needed to best meet the clinical and financial needs of the customer.
    • Repair or replace defective patient cables, probes, or other accessories.
    • Perform preventive maintenance by cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, calibrating, verifying performance and electrical safety testing.
    • Document equipment inspections, repairs, and failures in database.
    • Confer with faculty, staff, healthcare providers, laboratory staff, students, vendors, and management to resolve equipment problems.
    • Advises healthcare professionals and administrators on compliance issues related to medical equipment management.
    • Provide technical assistance and instruction on equipment operation and maintenance to clinical and laboratory personnel.
    • Schedule and oversee third-party repairs, as necessary.
    • May perform repairs on life support equipment under emergent conditions.
    • Drive state vehicles to service equipment at off-campus locations.
    • Design, modify and fabricate custom devices, cables, and accessories.
    • Evaluate, make recommendations, and approve devices for use on human subjects.
    • Evaluate medical equipment involved in unusual incidents.
    • Manage major projects such as new clinic startups, moves, expansions, etc.
    • Other related duties as assigned.

    Supervision:

    • Reports to a BMET Supervisor
    • Receives daily work assignments and training from Supervisors.
    • Regularly assign and review the work of other BMETs.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


    One year of experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician 2 OR Five years of experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician OR Equivalent education/experience.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Two years experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician 3


    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Generally good working conditions.

    Possible hazards include exposure to electrical shock, ionizing radiation, chemicals and chemical fumes, high-pressure gasses, infectious diseases, and other hazards encountered in clinical and laboratory settings.

    Protective clothing and equipment may be required in certain environments such as sterile operating rooms, animal care areas and Biosafety Level 3 laboratories.

    Constant reaching out, talking, and hearing.

    Frequent standing, walking, and grasping.


    Occasional sitting, bending, stooping, turning, twisting, bending neck, kneeling, squatting, climbing, wrist turning, pinching, fine manipulation, keyboarding, operating hand controls, operating foot controls, and driving University vehicle.

    Work Hours:
    Monday – Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM

    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
    • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
