Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Management, this position will assist in the development, planning, implementation, and maintenance of the university's emergency management programs.

This position will require excellent written communications skills, the ability to conduct research and use research methods, and the use of sophisticated training methods in a higher education setting.


Position Specific Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the University's Emergency operations and emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and business continuity protocols and policies consistent with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to the campus community on emergency management principles, including preparedness, personal safety, resiliency, continuity of operations, and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop an innovative emergency preparedness program for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Create and provide educational presentations to the campus community on emergency preparedness and distribute information on campus regarding emergency preparedness and response procedures.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of tabeltop, functional, and full-scale exercises.
  • Assist in developing EOC processes and position-specific checklists, and test and maintain EOC equipment on a regular basis.
  • Assist in the implementation and continued development of the alert and notification systems.
  • Maintain inventory of emergency supplies and equipment, and develop processes for replenishing and/or replacing inventory.
  • Participate in disaster response and recovery operations and staff the Emergency Operations Center or Incident Command Post as required.
  • Manage the building captain and emergency response team programs, and continue to develop evacuation procedures and training.
  • Manage the student work-study program, develop student work assignments, and maintain work-study schedules.
  • Monitor changes in federal, state and local laws and requirements related to emergency preparedness. Assist in recommending policy and program changes to respond to changing requirements.
  • Work with campus community and LMU partners to coordinate emergency management efforts and programs. Serve as liaison to/between external resources such as the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and other governmental agencies to ensure effective coordination.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, documentation, and reports in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Identify available training resources, coordinate attendance, and maintain an accurate training database to ensure the University is compliant with current NIMS requirements.
  • Supervise work-study students by developing work schedules, assigning tasks, providing feedback, monitoring timecards, and other related assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Bachelor's degree in emergency management or a related field highly preferred; or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700, 800;
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in emergency management or support role, including the development of emergency preparedness strategies, emergency plans, and the implementation of training and preparedness programs;
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements and guidance that pertain to emergency planning and disaster recovery"working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and the Higher Education Opportunity Act a plus;
  • Experience working in an Emergency Operations Center;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and proven ability to present to large groups of people;
  • Ability to work independently and with mínimal supervision;
  • Detailoriented, creative thinker with the ability to strategize and solve complex problems;
  • Superior judgment skills and ability to make important decisions in high pressure situations;

Salary range

$66, $87,776.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
