***: This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the Frederick community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The accountant will perform functions related to general accounting, monthly financial reporting, and budgeting & forecasting; document, implement and follow accounting policies and procedures for assigned responsibilities; confirm and abide by all applicable federal, state and local regulations related to assigned duties; assist in preparation of complete and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Provides peer to peer leadership and support to other accounting personnel and operations staff.
  • Perform various accounting activities and miscellaneous duties associated with general accounting

Tasks include:

  • Monthly journal entries, account reconciliations and balance sheet review
  • Reconcile subledger transactions posted to the General Ledger.
  • Proper allocation of revenues and expenses to departments, programs and grants.
  • Submission of financial data, invoices, reports, etc. to both internal and external customers, funders and stakeholders.
  • Assist the Director of Finance in preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting analysis.
  • Assist management staff with annual budgets and periodic forecasting. Prepare and/or review monthly variance to budget and forecast analysis.
  • Assist with the maintenance of an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds.
  • Serves as a resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting, budgeting & forecasting and financial reporting.
  • Maintain records, and prepare various internal and external reports, including reports for various federal and state agencies.
  • Provides requested documentation and support for annual independent audit and tax return preparations, including IRS Form 990.
  • Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required.
Provides recommendations.

  • Document policies, procedures, workflow, and checklists for assigned responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 1 year of accounting experience.
  • Experience working with Federal Grants preferred.
  • Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
  • Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
  • Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly MS Excel, ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.***

  • Ability to work cross

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to ascertain the reasonableness and accuracy of information.
  • Strong analytical, problemsolving and organizational skills.
  • Capable of working independently and managing multiple priorities; must be a selfstarter and take the initiative in completing projects and assignments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications with the ability to share knowledge at appropriate levels of the association.
  • Customer focused with strong attention to detail and capable of delivering accurate, quality results in a timely, consistent, and professional manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact comfortably and respectfully with all levels of personnel. Proven ability to successfully manage and resolve conflict.
