    Job Description

    Purpose of the Position

    Responsible for setting up and operating CNC machines according to drawing specifications, both in inch and metric units. This role involves working with vertical and horizontal milling machines, ensuring proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools for component inspection. Works under general supervision at the Sterling, VA location, but may be required to work at other Thorlabs facilities occasionally.

    Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to:

    • Performing setups on Lathe, Vertical, or Horizontal CNC Milling Machines (2, 3, or 4).
      • Experience with Haas or Okuma controls.
      • Understanding manual programming (G codes/M codes).
      • Familiarity with DNC systems.
    • Machining precision tools and fixturing based on specifications, with a focus on tight tolerances and complex geometries.
    • Interpreting mechanical design, reading blueprints, and understanding geometric tolerances.
    • Inspecting finished work pieces to ensure they meet specifications.
    • Completing assigned tasks to ensure on-time deliveries.
    • Performing machine maintenance and adhering to safety regulations.

    In addition to the essential functions mentioned:

    • Meeting company standards for quantity and quality of work.
    • Adhering to Company policies and directives regarding workplace behavior.

    The Company reserves the right to assign additional duties.

    Physical Activities:

    This position may involve standing or sitting for extended periods, occasional repetitive work, and exerting up to 50 lbs. of force. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and some contact with chemicals or fumes (mitigated by ventilation systems) can be expected.

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    Experience:
    - Minimum 1 year in a machine shop environment

    Education:
    - High School Diploma or equivalent
    - CNC certification or CNC Trade School preferred

    Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

    • Experience with Lean Principles and Setup Time Reduction is beneficial.
    • Strong work ethic, communication skills, and computer proficiency are essential.
    • Ability to work in a team, maintain high quality standards, and adapt to changing priorities.
