    Position Description

    Primary Purpose and Essential Functions

    Full-time; teacher-scholar track position; 4 days per week, 52 weeks per year; tenure eligible; reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Oral Health Education. The Pediatric Dentistry Department at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, is responsible for pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry didactic and clinical education.

    PRIMARY CHAIR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Leadership
      • Conduct oneself ethically at all times and assure ethical conduct and processes of the department.
      • Represent the growing edge of one's discipline through: (a) range of knowledge and skills in the discipline, (b) familiarity with and contribution to the literature, active participation in local, regional, and national organizations and networks.
      • Role model for Pediatric Clinic staff, school faculty, and students, with regards to: (a) scholarship and clinical skill, (b) commitment to the profession, personal responsibility, behavior and habits, (d) continuous growth, (e) humanistic respect for dignity of others, (f) adherence to and enforcement of school policy
      • Serve as the Director of the Dental Auxiliary Utilization program, and assure continued effectiveness and success of that educational program. Work with teaching dental assistants and pediatric clinic manager to maintain current curriculum and teaching methods, and provide opportunities for teaching assistants to maintain currency in their field as well as their teaching methods.
      • Initiate continuous improvements in: (a) academic program, (b) staff and departmental operation, teaching and learning advances in delivery and assessment, (d) collaboration with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Oral Health Education, Assistant Dean for Research, other chairs and faculty in decisions regarding: (a) curriculum, (b) academic standards, faculty standards, (d) research, (e) clinic operation.
      • Actively engage in the Student Academic Performance and Promotion Committee, representing pediatric dentistry and contributing to committee recommendations to the dean regarding student academic and enrollment status.
      • Actively engage with pediatric dentistry specialty and related education organizations, and serve as a resource for students and alumni seeking specialty training in pediatric dentistry. Serve as a resource for alumni treating pediatric patients in their general practices.
    2. Faculty Development
      • Continually assess the need for faculty and effectiveness of existing faculty.
      • Recruit and bring onboard faculty who are: (a) current and growing in their fields, (b) supporters of a model that combines humanism with sound academic standards, contribute to balance the overall strength of the school
      • Mentor and monitor faculty members' professional development through: (a) comprehensive orientation, (b) setting mutually agreed upon goals, providing or working to find needed resources, (d) providing regular feedback and honest appraisals, (e) account for faculty effort, (f) using progressive discipline and termination if necessary, (g) matching faculty to growth assignments and opportunities where possible, (h) encouraging and facilitating professional connections outside of school
      • Keep faculty informed and make opportunities for their participation through: (a) regular department communication and meetings as necessary, (b) distribution of information and policy, encouraging regular attendance and full participation in school functions, (d) compliance with all human resource policy, faculty policy, and other policies (e.g. attendance, Canvas site, syllabus, etc.) (e) assignment of faculty for teaching coverage.
    3. Manage the educational programs within the discipline and related curriculum areas.
      • Oversee current, comprehensive educational materials for all areas of the pediatric dentistry curriculum to students in format(s) appropriate to optimize student learning and to serve as a resource to students post-curriculum.
      • Ensure that competencies are current and complete by: (a) continually scanning developments and the state-of-the-disciplines, (b) articulating realistic competency standards for students
      • Ensure that the educational experiences available to students are effective by: (a) providing current, properly sequenced, and well-presented instruction and practice, (b) recognizing learning difficulties and providing appropriate remediation, challenging all students to stretch for excellence and providing such opportunity
      • Ensure that evaluation is valid and useful by: (a) using evaluation methods that match competencies, (b) supporting educational decisions with sound evaluation data, calibrating faculty, (d) ensuring compliance with academic policy
      • Set, promote, and expect high standards of performance from students, as well as department staff and faculty.
      • Provide mentorship/assistance as necessary to students struggling academically or otherwise per direction of the Student Academic Performance and Promotions Committee.
      • Seek feedback from residency colleagues and others as appropriate to gauge student preparedness (foundational knowledge and skills) in pediatric patient care upon their graduation and entry into practice and/or pediatric residency training programs.
      • Guide and assist students as necessary on pediatric dentistry residency educational opportunities. Provide thoughtful, honest feedback to programs on student applicants based on a thorough knowledge of each student's academic record, qualifications for residency training, and personal attributes.
      • Work with administration to study feasibility of creating a pediatric dentistry advanced education residency program, should that opportunity present.
    4. General management
      • Collaborate with Associate/Assistant Deans and Pediatric Clinic Manager to ensure appropriate faculty coverage in the Pediatric Clinic, sim-lab, and classrooms.
      • Participate in forming, implementing and enforcing school policy.
      • Manage content coordinators within your disciplines.
      • Plan overall needs and associated expenses.
      • Monitor and account for departmental budgets.
      • Maintain appropriate relations with the administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
      • Advocate for needed resources.
      • Complete reports and projects in a timely manner.
      • Identify resources of financial support for the department and school.
      • Attend and support school and university meetings and events.
      • Support goals and mission of the school.
    SPECIFIC PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
    Provide leadership and support, plan, organize, manage, and direct the pre-doctoral pediatric dentistry didactic and clinical learning experiences; and administrative functions of the pediatric clinic.
    • Plan, organize, direct and manage the daily activities of the pediatric clinic enterprise, including pediatric dentistry and dental auxiliary utilization.
    • Oversee, and work with team, to provide evidence-based, ethical patient-centered care.
    • Work as a liaison with other departments and clinical disciplines.
    • Plan, organize, and make recommendations affecting or relating to the student educational program.
    • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in professional organizations, seminars and workshops.
    • Represent the discipline and clinical operation and participate on various school committees.
    • Provide leadership, direction, support, and recognition to support staff.
    • Provide support to Pediatric Clinic Manager in all areas of management to include staff development, work distribution, performance management, adherence to policies and procedures, and work schedules.
    • Review, evaluate and recommend staffing levels according to department and program needs.
    • Monitor clinic production and expenses
    • Ensure faculty, students and staff adhere to safety protocol and policies; collaborate with Director of Risk Management and Environmental Safety regarding protocols, requirements, documentation, and training.
    • Participate in Clinic Quality Assurance/Initiatives processes.
    • Recruit, hire, develop and manage qualified faculty to provide a state-of-the-art educational experience for the predoctoral program.
    • Current and continual maintenance of Board Certification in American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of:
    • Curriculum management as it relates to Pediatric Dentistry.
    • Competency based education and assessment.
    • Modern pedagogical concepts and application in health professions education.
    • HIPAA.
    • Trends in oral health and oral health education.
    • Dental school based clinic enterprise.
    • Dental accreditation standards and processes.
    Experience:
    • Minimum of seven years of work experience in a dental school setting with administrative responsibilities. Prior chair experience is preferable.
    • Successful research background.
    • Competence with MSWord, Excel, axiUm, Outlook, Canvas (or equivalent EMS), SharePoint databases, virtual meeting and curriculum delivery platforms.
    Education:
    • DDS/DMD from an ADA-accredited school of dentistry.
    • Certificate or degree indicating successful completion of an ADA-accredited residency in pediatric dentistry.
    • Board Certification in American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
    • Licensed or licensure eligible in California.
    Working Conditions:
    • Position requires coordination of a variety of responsible duties in stressful situations.
    • Must be available to work additional hours during weekdays and some weekends.

    Experience:
    • Course work or advanced degree in adult education preferred but not required.

    Physical Requirements
    • Work performed is primarily general office/administrative/patient care with frequent use of computer keyboard and phone.
    • Requires sitting majority of the working day; standing, bending and walking.
    • Occasional lifting of up to 15lbs should be anticipated.
