    Position Description

    Primary Purpose and Essential Functions

    Reporting to the Chair of Diagnostic Sciences, direct the Redwood City Navigation Center for individuals transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing; responsible for providing dental treatment and management for patients with complex medical and social conditions as part of a larger interdisciplinary team, and providing on-site clinical education for our pre- and post- doctoral students, residents and fellows, licensed dentists, and other health care providers.

    The position has an expected duration of no more than 5 years and is dependent upon continued availability of grant funding.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Establish the Pacific Dental Program within the Navigation Center and coordinate some dental services with the adjacent Maple Street Correctional Facility.
    • Work with the on-site Dugoni dental staff and other Navigation Center medical and social services providers to establish clinic protocols and practices for patient registration and intake, direct general dentistry patient care and establish access and referral for specialty services and transition to a permanent dental home.
    • Assist in the establishment of student rotations and protocols, including appropriate procedures and protocols to maintain strict infection control standards in the clinic.
    • Teach and provide oversight of DDS students on rotation.
    • Provide teaching/instruction for students and residents from Pacific's School of Pharmacy, School of Health Sciences and other Health Professions Students in collaboration with other community partners.
    • Direct patient care through independent practice and direct supervision of student clinics
    • Effectively collaborate with and manage adjunct and specialty faculty providing services and clinical education on site; ensure teaching for all on-site faculty remains within the scope of practice at all times.
    • Manage staff, time and clinical resources.
    • Ensure appropriate use of electronic dental and integrated health records.
    • Collaborate, communicate and bridge information and practice from the dental school, The Navigation Center and other key stakeholders in San Mateo County.
    • Develop, maintain and promote an environment of quality patient care
    • Include learners in process of CQA (clinical quality assessment) and CQI (clinical quality improvement).
    • Develop didactic curriculum for lectures or seminars.
    • Participate in scholarship activities consistent with the Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Handbook section for non tenure track faculty.
    • Participate in service activities such as committees and other school and university events in order to maintain strong ties to the school, stakeholders in our educational program and the community.
    • Participate in enhancing Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Practice (IPP) opportunities on, off and across campuses.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Department Chairperson, Diagnostic Sciences.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of:
    • General dentistry principles.
    • Principles in Geriatrics and Gerontology.
    • Principles in Pediatric Dentistry.
    • Practice management systems in order to ensure efficient use of clinic time and tracking of clinic expense and revenue.
    Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively with administration, staff, students and public through oral and written communications.
    • Serve as a liaison between Dugoni and Community Partners.
    • Develop and deliver presentations.
    • Analyze problems, provide solutions and implement recommendations.
    • Prepare and present reports concisely and logically.
    • Effectively manage projects and deadlines with close attention to detail.
    • Work with minimal supervision.
    • Demonstrate dedication to professional development in both clinical and teaching capacities.
    • Provide a full range of general dental services for children and adults as well as those with complex medical conditions.
    • Treatment plan directly with patients as well as surrogate decision makers.
    • Coordinate services with caregivers and other advocates.
    Experience:
    • Minimum of one year of AEGD/GPR or other relevant advanced training plus two years of practice OR four years relevant clinical practice experience.
    • Experience working and collaborating within teams.
    Education/Training/Licenses:
    • DDS or DMD degree.
    • Current, active license to practice dentistry.
    • Valid CPR certification.
    • Completion of Denti-Cal training and enroll as a provider on behalf of the school within 6 months of hire.
    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge of:
    • Use of integrated Electronic Health Record.
    Education/Training/Licenses:
    • Advanced training or experience in Dental Public Health.
    Experience:
    • Experience teaching or lecturing in Health Professions Education is highly desirable.
    • Experience working with children and/or adults with complex medical and psycho-social conditions.
    • Experience with practice management.
    • Experience with Denti-cal.
    • Experience in an integrated clinical setting.
    • Experience working with unhoused populations.
    Physical Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative but not definitive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Work performed is primarily clinical care for patients with complex needs. This may require standing or stooping to provide care. Ability to participate in transferring patients from wheelchairs to a dental chair may be required.
    • General office/administrative work required, including frequent use of computer keyboard and phone.
    • Work may include standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time as well as bending or stooping to meet patient needs.
    • Ideal chair position and posture may not be attainable for extended periods of time when caring for patients with significant physical and cognitive disability.
    • May require standing for periods of time when teaching in clinics or classrooms.There maybe other physical requirements associated with clinic maintenance and management and handling of supplies, equipment and instruments.
    Working Conditions:
    • Position is full-time, 5 days per week Monday - Friday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m. There may be a need for modified clinic hours in the future.
    • Work will be performed at Redwood City Navigation Center and occasionally at the Neighboring Maple Street Correctional Center (MSCC).
    • Requires occasional attendance to weekend/evening events and meetings.
    • Travel may be required for calibration, cross training, and other special events. Travel may also be required across San Mateo County and the Bay Area for the purpose of collaboration with other stakeholders. Travel to National professional meetings to share and learn may also be required.
    • Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may be reasonably anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided and use will be required to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents.
    Hiring Range
    $155,000 - $175,000 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
