For over half a century, we have utilized an array of legal and advocacy strategies—community organizing, affirmative civil rights litigation, and eviction defense to defend the rights of individuals and families.

Collaboration with the city, state, and federal officials to enforce housing laws and develop legislative solutions is also an integral part of our strategy.

Brooklyn A has three core departments —Preserving Affordable Housing (PAH), Consumer & Economic Advocacy (CEA), and Community & Economic Development (CED)—each of which has unique initiatives and plays a vital community role to ensure basic needs are met and fundamental rights affirmed.


Position Summary:

The Accountant will be an integral part of Brooklyn A's Finance team.

Under guidance of the Chief Financial Officer, the Accountant will provide support for the day-to-day financial and accounting operations to include:


  • Participating in the daytoday finance and accounting operations;
  • Managing the accounts payable function by processing invoices, responding to vendors inquiries, maintaining strong vendor relations; and issue 1099's for yearended;
  • Supporting the monthend close process and preparation of monthly/annual reporting;
  • Providing support for grants management and submission of vouchers to government funders;
  • Reconciling GL account cash and credit card accounts, as needed;
  • Posting and reconciling cash receipts and disbursements in a timely and accurate manner to the GL;
  • Monitoring and maintaining proper coding of restricted gifts in GL;
  • Post and reverse accruals as needed to properly expense in correct time periods;
  • Analyzing data and summarizing into easy to read reports, charts and graphs; and
  • Perform other accounting duties as requested.

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field of experience;
  • Minimum 23 years relevant work experience within a finance department, nonprofit experience with government contracts preferred;
  • Understanding of accrual accounting and knowledge of GAAP principles;
  • Strong financial and analytical skills, including skills using Excel (Pivot Tables, V-LOOK UPS and SUMIF formulas);
  • Strong analytical, presentation, communication, and problemsolving skills;
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office package software and financial management and payroll systems;
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate and summarize financial records for accuracy and conformance to procedures, rules, and regulations;
  • Strong reporting and recordkeeping skills, including the ability to synthesize lots of quantifiable and qualitative data into clear, plain language and readable charts and checklists;
  • Must be able to work strategically within a team structure as well as independently, multitask and work under tight deadlines;
  • Dependability, good time management and organizational skills and be attentive to detail;and
  • Thorough commitment to Brooklyn A's mission.

Compensation & Benefits
Annual salary $65,000-75,000, dependent on years of experience.
