General Description:


  • This is routine manual and semiskilled work in the performance of a wide variety of custodial and building cleaning and light maintenance tasks. Employees work independently keeping the Department of Transportation facilities clean, functional, and aesthetically intact. This work involves such activities as, cleaning, waxing and buffing office and shop floors, emptying trash, cleaning bathrooms and common areas, dusting, washing windows, as well as light maintenance such as changing light bulbs, landscape care, snow shoveling, and minor painting. Work is reviewed by a Supervisor or Lead Worker.

Work Hours:

Monday - Friday: 2:00pm - 10:00pm

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

General Cleaning Duties:


  • Maintain floors, carpets, and stairways by sweeping vacuuming, scrubbing, and mopping.
  • Perform floor maintenance duties including stripping, waxing, buffing, and burnishing floors to ensure cleanliness and shine.
  • Wash and remove blemishes from windows, light fixtures, blinds, mirrors, and walls.
  • Clean and maintain rooms by dusting, scrubbing, and polishing shelves, furniture, fabric partitions, bathroom fixtures, ceilings, and other equipment and/or appliances.
  • Collect and remove trash and refuse from wastebaskets, trash boxes, and other refuse/recyclable containers and properly dispose of wastes.
  • Sterilize toilets, urinals, sinks, showers, and floors in restrooms.
  • Stock and replenish toilet paper, hand towels, and other sanitation supplies throughout facilities.
  • Mix and dilute concentrate chemicals, as needed.
  • Arrange furniture and set up equipment as specified.
  • Disinfect high touch surfaces such as: tables, counters, desks, microwaves, refrigerators, doors and drinking fountains.
  • Perform tasks such as raking and watering lawns, snow and ice removal (by hand), trash pickup, sweeping parking lots and sidewalks.

Perform Miscellaneous Duties as Needed or Requested:

  • Research, recommend, order and procure equipment and supplies.
  • Deliver vehicles to Fleet Services and run errands.
  • Launder clothing, towels, etc.
  • Take responsibility for building facilities.
  • Assist Maintenance Mechanic 1 with light maintenance tasks.
Perform related work as required.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • One (1) year of experience performing custodial or related work.
  • Materials, equipment, supplies, and methods commonly employed in a building cleaning operation.
  • Cleaning devices and their care and maintenance requirements.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid driver's license.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and perform work while walking/standing for a large percentage of time.
  • Must be able to frequently bend, twist, squat, climb (including ladders) and reach.
  • Must be able to to mix chemicals for cleaning solutions.
