The Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York (CIDNY) is a leading organization serving and representing people with disabilities in New York City.

Position Summary:

The Director of Consumer Services will be a member of the Management Team and will report to the Executive Director.

The Director of Consumer Services will provide the following:

Provide supervision to enhance Senior Benefits Counselors and Benefits Counselors understanding of how to work with people with disabilities in the following areas:

  • the importance of privacy and confidentiality;
- establishing relationships with all individuals;

  • Peer counseling;
  • Independent living skills training;
  • Selfadvocacy skill development;
  • Youth Transition;
  • Deinstitutionalization and prevention of institutionalization;
  • Benefits advisement;
  • Maintaining documentation of the individual's goals and progress towards achieving those goals and outcomes;
  • Referral to other agencies including referral methodology;
  • Provision of language appropriate services;
  • Provision of reasonable accommodations;
  • Handling crises and difficult behaviors.


Provide individual direct supervision (e.g., weekly, bi-weekly) to Senior Benefits Counselors for discussion of ongoing cases and review of Benefits Counselors' case record timeliness and accuracy and ensure that Senior Benefits Counselors are conducting case reviews meetings with Benefits Counselors on a regular basis.

In addition, you will provide direct supervision to Program Coordinators and Intake Counselors.

  • Provide and coordinate oral and written performance feedback for staff.
  • Coordinate inservice trainings to increase staff knowledge of independent living, public benefits, and other identified learning needs.
  • Develop and manage relationships with external agencies.


The Director of Consumer Services shall:


  • Oversee Intake Specialists and assist in managing staffing and workload requirements for Senior Benefits Counselors & Benefits Counselors;
  • Develop quality indicators for individual case notes;
  • Conduct quarterly quality reviews of individual case notes and provide organized feedback to staff on identified deviations from quality indicators;


The Director of Consumer Services shall:


  • Provide reports to funders;
  • Work with contract manager regarding contract compliance;
  • Meet with funders to discuss contract performance.
  • Provide input regarding program and funding opportunities;
  • Contribute to agency responses to RFPs related to individual services.


The Director of Consumer Services shall:


  • Assist in aggregating staff's contribution to the organization's systemic advocacy by communicating observed barriers/successes related to benefits and services available to people with disabilities, participating in advocacy activities and identifying individuals' who may participate in advocacy;
  • Contribute, as needed, in the formulation of strategic advocacy and education agendas;
  • Contribute, as appropriate, to the organization's development of "best practices."
  • Master's degree (MSW preferred) or equivalent degree and at least three years of postgraduate supervisory & administrative experience;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Proven management skills, including ability to provide effective transfer of knowledge to staff members in the conduct of casework;
  • Ability to problem solve quickly and calmly in a fastpaced environment;
  • Expertise on a range of disability issues;
  • Language fluency in a language other than English desired;
  • Strong commitment to CIDNY's mission.

  • Location: CIDNY's Manhattan Office 1010 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 301, NY, NY 10018 on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 38thStreet.
