    Fork Union Military Academy is a college preparatory Christian boarding school for young men that leverages the structure of a military environment. The Academy strives to develop each young man holistically in a "Body, Mind & Spirit" framework to propel them to be exceptional. The Academy aspires to produce young men with a Biblical worldview fully equipped to become leaders throughout society both in the US and abroad. Fork Union Military Academy is located in Fork Union, Virginia, between Charlottesville and Richmond. The Academy has enjoyed 125 years of outstanding service to families throughout the world and desires to position itself to serve young men for the next century.


    Reporting to the Academy Chief of Staff, The Director of Development will serve as Fork Union Military Academy's primary strategic fundraising officer and philanthropic thought leader. The Director of Development will work directly with the President of the Academy and Chief of Staff in support of the school's mission and strategic plan by achieving fundraising objectives. The director will be expected to design long-range fundraising plans and incorporate measures to determine progress. The successful candidate will have at least five years of demonstrated ability to plan, execute, secure and steward transformational gifts through individual effort and management by identifying, qualifying, and soliciting major/principal contributor prospects. The Director of Development will also be responsible to coach and manage their department in the process of securing philanthropic support for the Academy such as fundraising, alumni relations, event coordination, submission of grants and data analysis.


    The Director of Development will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/Business Office to track all donations and reporting. The Director of Development will manage the Development Department. The position requires communication with the President and collaboration with the Chief of Staff, fellow directors, faculty, and coaches. Finally, the position will frequently interact directly with the Fork Union Military Academy Board of Trustees and Fork Union Military Academy Foundation.


    Responsibilities:

    • Leads Academy fundraising priorities.
    1. Develops fundraising campaigns, strategies and methods or activities to ensure the Academy meets its financial objectives.
    2. Proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship of donors.
    3. Evaluate effectiveness of development programs and coordinate securing gifts at various levels to contribute to the financing of the school.
    Lead and manage the development team. Properly manage the development database to facilitate engagement with the prospective donors and assist in the effort to assimilate alumni information.Oversee coordinated and targeted grant applications. Works in close association with the President of the Academy and the Board of Trustees in soliciting funds for the Academy. Liaises with the Alumni Association Board and alumni.Direct the strategic process for fundraising efforts both short and long term.Manage the preparation and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the President, Chairperson/Board of Trustees, and appropriate external organizations. Coordinate the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of philanthropic support to include but not limited to the annual giving effort and designated campaigns. Lead the effort to establish trusting relationships with corporations, foundations, and individuals, including alumni, faculty, staff, and cadet families, and other key stakeholders. Guide and assist the development team in the execution within their areas of focus.Strive to grow the endowment through cultivation of donors who will benefit the Academy. Coordinate initiatives for the President of the school to engage with donors along with alumni and create and maintain relationships for the Academy.Advise and report to the President and Board of Trustees on development matters relating to the Academy. Provide oversight on external development efforts.Prepare 5-Year Fundraising Plan consistent with the strategic plan.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree or higher
    • Possess 5 years of professional and practical experience in fundraising with multiple responsibilities in leadership positions.
    • Relevant certifications preferred but not required.
    • Experience with data collection, trend analysis and reporting.
    • Knowledge of budget management, reporting and the use of spreadsheet software.
    • Proficiency in database management (preferably Blackbaud), Office 365, and other appropriate computer applications.

    • Ability to develop and implement effective development policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
    • Understanding of various donor giving tax strategies with a high-level understanding of associated tax considerations.
    • Ability to oversee and elevate grant application process.
    • Must have a high degree of flexibility, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and a high level of independent thought and initiative.
    • Excellent communications, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

    Working Environment and Required Activities:

    • This position is on-site in an office setting.
    • The occupant of the position must be willing to travel extensively both independently and with other key individuals.
    • Adept functional knowledge of Blackbaud's Razor's Edge operating system.
    • Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, , but must have flexibility based on scheduled events.
    • Ability to sit or stand for long periods if necessary.
    • Ability to walk, sit, and carry objects weighing no more than 40 lbs.

    • Must adhere to a strict confidentiality policy.
    • Possess a high degree of multi-tasking and time management capabilities.
    • Excellent written and oral skills
    • Must maintain a friendly and positive attitude.
    • Must have a high degree of professionalism.
    • Must be able to work as a productive member of a team and serve as a positive role model for young men.
