- Field Support Engineer – is generally a mechanical or electrical engineer (who learns towards hardware) who is familiar with robotic work cells as well as working in a manufacturing or fulfillment center environment. Their skills are stronger with the hardware and pneumatic systems used to drive a robotic work cell. They are responsible for every day operation and maintenance. They work with the remote hardware and software teams to implement changes. They facilitate running tests that capture data and facilitate continuous improvement. Their strengths for determining root causes are geared more towards the mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical problems.

They bring practical, hands on kills to the support team. They have experience working on the hardware and software issues in robotic and automated equipment. Generally, the technician role will be used once the workcell safety system has matured to a phase where less engineering skills are needed. The contracted on-site Field Service Engineering role provides early stage Manipulation workcells with the onsite engineering resources required for the on-going development of the early phase, i.e. Alpha and Beta, work cells. These are skilled engineers who have been trained to run the systems with minimal safety systems deployed. There are three general types of support Technical support Engineer, Systems Engineer, and Field Technician.
