    The Physician Extender position is located at the NC Correctional Institute for Women (NCCIW). This position will report to the Medical Director of NCCIW.

    The provider will perform physical exams and provide primary care services for acute and chronic medical conditions to the offender population at this facility.

    The provider evaluates patients in a medical clinic setting, consults with patients and refers to other clinics or specialists as needed.

    Providers order diagnostic and lab tests, write prescriptions, transfer patients to infirmary unit, document in electronic medical records, and perform life-saving procedures.

    This is a primary care provider position and is responsible for medical care to all offenders/patients as scheduled.

    The position also provides emergency care for employees as needed, and may participate in policy development, staff meetings, and other administrative functions as required by the Medical Director.

    The provider must work collaboratively with Psychiatrists, Nurses, Social Workers, and many other disciplines involved in the delivery of patient-centered treatment services.

    Provider will possess Primary Care level of knowledge of psychopharmacology, including the risks and side effects of psychiatric medication and commonly used psychotherapies.

    The provider may be asked to participate in staff meetings, CQI, projects, and other related assigned duties. Participates in the On-Call Rotation.

    This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

    NC Department of Adult Correction (DAC):
    The Dept.

    of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.

    This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision.

    Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

    The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position.

    To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:


    • Demonstrated knowledge of theory, principles and practices of general and preventative medicine and the techniques involved.


    Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board.
