Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Lead Painter performs lead supervisory and skilled work in the surface preparation, coating preparation and painting of building exteriors and in refinishing furniture and fixtures.

Detailed Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Mixing and matching paints, including, tinting, toning and the mixing and blending of additions;
  • Finishing or refinishing furniture, cabinetry or other equipment including paneling, if necessary;
  • Maintaining time and work order recorders;
  • Ordering, distributing and inventorying paint and other materials;
  • Preparing reports as required;
  • Assigning crews in response to emergency situation resulting from vandalism, fires, flooding or storms;
  • Enforcing safety rules and regulations;
  • Assisting Building Maintenance Foreman II in supervisory duties and
  • Training and instructing subordinates.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:


  • Thorough knowledge of standard tools, equipment and practices used in painting trades;
  • Knowledge of the hazards and the necessary safety precautions of painting projects;
  • Ability to assign work, supervise and carry a job through to completion and inspect finished project;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
  • Good physical condition.
  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS


High School diploma and or vocational course; Supervisory experience at the level of Painter II; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's license at the time of appointment; and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince Georges County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987).


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises the work of crews composed of Painter II, Painters I, and Trades Helpers.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments.

The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
