Description
Responsible for the safety, and security of ZNE's guests, visitors, staff, animal collection, and property. Maintain, supervise and support the Safety & Security Officers at Zoo New England.

Responsible for facilitating Annual Performance Evaluations, administering the time and attendance on a bi-weekly basis and ensuring that all administrative paperwork for the Safety & Security department is processed in a timely fashion.

Work in unison with the Safety & Security Manager regarding enforcement of safety & security procedures, protocols, and regulations. Responsible for assisting the Safety & Security Manager with safety drills and emergency preparedness. Act as the liaison at the Franklin Park Zoo site regarding safety & security matters.

Must maintain a professional, pleasant and respectful demeanor in the course of providing safety & security on behalf of Zoo New England.

Responsible for attending Zoo meetings regarding related safety & security issues. Some meeting may take place at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA.

Must be able to effectively communicate with employees, guests, visitors, and vendors as well as other identified community partners and Zoo supporters.

Responsible for administering and the facilitation of several safety & security programs, working with the Safety & Security Manager on the Safety Committee to ensure compliance, procedures, and trainings are adequate.

Ensure that all Safety & Security Department staff members comply with ZNE's annual driver's license background check and defensive driving test requirements.

This position upon request will serve as back up support in the absence of the Safety & Security Manager. This position is required to provide safety & security services at the Franklin Park Zoo as needed. Must be able to work flexible hours, weekends & holidays. The ability to work indoors and outdoors is required.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise, and mentor the Safety & Security Officers. Provide needed training and resources.
  • Provide leadership and guidance as needed and required.
  • Ensure that all shifts are covered.
  • Train the new Safety & Security Officers to perform their duties, responsibilities, procedures, and protocols.
  • Ensure that the Safety & Security Officers are well groomed and dressed in their proper uniforms on a daily basis.
  • Maintain uniform supplies and enforce dress code compliance.
  • Ensure that the Safety & Security Officers are representing Zoo New England in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner in the course of providing safety & security services.
  • Review all Incident Reports for accuracy, and completeness. Bring issues of concerns to the attention of the Safety & Security Manager. All incident reports must be written in a clear, factual and precise manner.
  • Ensure that all safety & security logs are utilized, complete and updated as needed.
  • Support, and enforce all company policies and procedures, and report violations to the Safety & Security Manager.
  • Maintain a highly visible patrol around the Zoo.
  • Perform the duties of a Safety & Security Officer when needed.
  • Ensure that information flows up and down the chain of command.
  • Act as the point of contact in the absence of the Safety & Security Manager.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Safety & Security Manager upon request.
  • Facilitate the Safety & Security Officers' training protocols.
These training sessions should include but are not limited to:

Perimeter checks, ZNE radio usage, and Radio Codes, Incident Report writing, Investigative procedures, Employee Identification Cards, issuance and renewals, CPR & Blood Bourne Pathogen training and protocols, Zoo-wide drill participation.


  • Ensure that all the Safety & Security Officers are provided appropriate training during the onboarding process and throughout the course of their employment.
  • Hold weekly meetings with the Safety and Security Officers to gain an understanding of their challenges and needs. To keep the lines of communication open, to maintain efficient and effective departmental protocols and systems.
  • Facilitate and administer the following safety programs: Fire Drill, Smoke, and fire alarm maintenance, and inspections, Injury Drills, monitoring and maintaining all First Aid Kits, CPR/First Aid training, and Blood Born Pathogen training.
  • Supervise and Monitor all safety and security assets all cleaned and function , Security vehicle, Communication radio and phone, Security booth, Package room.
  • Perform all other duties pertaining to my carrier.

Working Conditions


Working in an office setting, use of a computer, printer, copier, and other office equipment, the ability to sit and stand for significant periods of time on continuous bases.
