The School of Earth and Space Exploration is looking for an Exploration Theater Events Technical Director to join it's Community Outreach Group.

This position manages facilities, systems, departmental resources, and content acquisition leading to the deployment of public facing programs and presentations on behalf of ASU School of Earth and Space Exploration.

The theater employs Definiti SkySkan Planetarium technology utilizing 4K projection systems that render Earth and space science themes in 3D stereographic vision.

It supervises services provided for 350 to 450 events per year of varying complexity including classes, lectures, receptions, programs, performances, meetings, and festivals.

This position also directly supervises 4 to 8 student workers, and co-supervises 4 to 8 student workers with others.

Essential Duties

  • Manage scheduling, preparation, and maintenance of outreach facilities including the Marston Exploration Theater, Gallery of Scientific Exploration, and ancillary shared use facilities. This includes classroom support for college level courses scheduled in supported facilities.
  • Manage a "facility use by others" program by facilitating events by other ASU and community users of SESE managed spaces.
  • Develop and deliver compelling programs available to the general public related to space and technology themes.
  • Recruit and train student workers as theater technicians and science communication presenters.
  • Maintain budget(s) associated with managed facilities and programs, including revenue from ticket sales and program fees and facility recharge as well as expenses associated with student labor, equipment maintenance and content development.
  • With other department coordinators, execute a toplevel K12 field trip program by leveraging SESE's unique research focus to inspire school aged youth.
  • Maintain collegial and collaborative relationships with other ASU departments as a learning resource and as a tour destination for ASU visitors and guests.
  • Maintain specialized presentation and display technologies for Gallery devices and the Marston Theater 3D 'planetarium' system.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree with a major in theatre production or related field AND two years of experience in management and/or production of events, theatre productions or similar; OR, six years of experience in management and/or production of events, theatre productions or similar; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in technical audio video skills, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting a range of projection, playback, and broadcast hardware and software.
  • Experience with Definiti SkySkan technology with 4k projections systems, or similar
  • Demonstrated general to specific knowledge of astronomical science, history, and culture.
  • Experience in describing and communicating astronomical phenomena and space technology at an undergraduate level.
  • Event management experience
  • Experience supervising employees
  • Evidence in being a team oriented and have demonstrable experience operating in an environment of service, support and respect of coworkers

Working Environment
Position will primarily work in an environmentally controlled building, office, and theater spaces. However, there will be occasional need to perform duties outside for events. Schedule may also fluctuate due to events and have some weekend and after hours work.

Position will need to be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time during events and presentations. Will need to be able to navigate theater stairs and tech booth. Will need to be able to push, pull, bend, reach, crawl, and lift.

Will also need to sit for varying lengths of time, and be able to use a computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, theater light and audio/visual tech board, and other office equipment as needed.
