Summary Description:


Plans, organizes, coordinates and delivers a multiple program designed to promote Harvard Community Senior Center's mission and vision: "The Harvard Community Senior Center serves McHenry County seniors by providing evidence-based programs, services, and social activities at a pleasant, safe, and welcoming gathering place and/or in the senior's home or other comfort setting.

HCSC's vision of being positive, healthful, and life enhancing includes connections to community-based supports and partner programs that help Older Adults achieve their lifelong human potential." Will supervise and coordinate all Senior Center programs, staff, volunteers and facility.

The E.D. is directly responsible to the Harvard Community Senior Center (HCSC) Board of Directors


Qualifications include post-secondary degree in area related to gerontology, business administration, or non-profit management and additional experience to complement such as education within a comparable field.

Demonstrated ability to work with the senior population, business, governmental and community sectors. Proven leadership history in all areas of organizational administration. Personal commitment to agency's success. Solid track record in securing sustainable funding. Understanding of, and experience in, the development and implementation of strategic planning and program planning. State of Illinois approved SHIP Counselor Training/Certification required. Non-Profit Management Training/Certification required.

Works closely with staff, board members, consultants, community leaders, volunteers, contractors, program partners and senior participants. Is active in day to day operations of all programs and providing of programs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researches, develops, plans, and coordinates senior citizen programs with resources, procedures, and services to meet the diverse needs of the senior population.
  • Initiates, plans, presents and evaluates educational and social programs for the senior population.
  • Provides information and referral services to older adults, caregivers, and families about services and programs available for older adults.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates Center staff including the recruitment and training of volunteer workers and instructors.
  • Supervises all full and parttime employees at the Center as well as volunteers
  • Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.
  • Handles all financial matters related to the Center operations and maintains all records regarding programming, attendance, incident, maintenance, and others as needed.
  • Participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget, forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies and monitor and approve expenditures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to work well with senior citizens and able to understand their needs, interests, and activities.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the principles and practices needed to effectively administer senior programs.
  • Ability to effectively relate to a variety of people, particularly the elderly, and to encourage their participation in Senior Center activities.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn federal, state and regional programs available to the elderly.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, psychological, social and health needs of the elderly.
  • Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) certification, or ability to obtain after being hired.
  • Program to Encourage Active Rewarding LiveS certification, or ability to obtain after being hired.
  • Ability to prepare and present grants and source other funding streams.
  • Ability to prepare effective narrative and statistical reports.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Ability to administer an office and budget.
  • Ability to use computer software for daily reporting and other material.
  • Ability to set policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop fundraising plan and procure donors.

Physical Demands Required to speak, hear, walk, sit, stand, bend, stoop, or crouch. Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds. Ability to routinely use hands, fingers and wrists for repetitive motion, to handle and/or feel equipment, objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to climb stairs or ladders to various levels.

Specific vision required for this job include close vision and ability to focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. The employee must be able to hear normal sounds with the presence of background noise.
