Primary Purpose:

Responsible for increasing the academic achievement of English Learners and therefore decrease the gap in the district T-2-4 data related to EL Learners.

This specialist will work with all teachers serving EL students to increase student success in academic courses, as well as teachers serving students in Languages Other Than English (LOTE).


Qualifications/Skills:


Education/Certification:


  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Valid Texas teacher certification or teaching certificate from out of state appropriate to position.
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE) certification required within first year of employment.
  • English as a second language (ESL) certification required within first year of employment.
  • Bilingual certification preferred.
  • Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.

Special Knowledge/Skills:


  • Strong pedagogy knowledge required.
  • Knowledge of and training on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and best practices in content areas for diverse learners.
  • Knowledge and expertise with English language acquisition, building academic vocabulary via the use of English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), language objectives, and willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of English Language Learners (ELL) strategies, adult learning methodology, and RTI strategies preferred.
  • Demonstrate evidence of professional growth, including leadership and/or participation in a wide range of professional learning experiences.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of instructional strategies, role of Professional Learning Communities (PLC), using data to change teacher practice, student assessment, and use of instructional technology.
  • Experience differentiating content to English Learners, grouping students, and delivering instruction to personalize classroom experiences.
  • Knowledge of effective English Learner instructional strategies and researchbased best practices including (but not limited to) projectbased learning, differentiated instruction, lesson planning and student assessment required.
  • Knowledge and experience in coaching and training preferred. Facilitation, training, and presentation skills preferred.
  • Knowledge and comfort with the use of technology in the classroom
- familiarity with a Learning Management System and/or data system preferred.

  • Demonstrate communication skills and interpersonal skills that promote collaboration and effective communication with adults.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver articulate oral presentations to a variety of audiences.

Experience:


  • Evidence of at least three (3) years of recent successful classroom teaching experience required.
  • Experience using student and campus level data to select, implement and differentiate instructional methods, designed to meet each student's individual needs preferred.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Instructional Strategies:


  • Provide support, mentoring, coaching and training for identified teachers serving English learners, languages other than English, and campus administrators.
  • Conduct needs analysis to identify teaching EL learning needs at each campus, as well as organize and implement problemsolving strategies with teachers and administrators.
  • Facilitate training and coaching in areas that include but are not limited to: effective instruction, differentiation, strategies for English Language Learners, proficiency based instruction for foreign language learners, datadriven instruction.
  • Work with teachers (inteams or individually) to refine their knowledge and skills. Methods of instruction may include inclass coaching, peer observation, coteaching, and modeling effective instruction using a gradual release structure.
  • Work with teachers to assist with the structure of common planning time and determine accountability measures to ensure time is used effectively.
  • Facilitate protocols for assessment of student work to drive instructional decisions.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of lesson planning and common assessments.
  • Assist with integration of TEKS into curriculum focal points.
  • Coordinate instructional coaching cadre at schools with teachercoaches.
  • Develop and write curriculum as needed.

  • Assist with design and implementation of highquality buildinglevel professional development.
