    Job Summary:


    The EEG Technician I is trained to operate EEG machines which measure and record the electrical activity of the brain, which assist in the diagnosis of epileptic/seizure disorders.

    The EEG Technician I is responsible for providing and administering Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by physicians.

    The incumbent will gather and document a patient's medical history, explain the testing procedure, prepare the patient for the procedure, and perform the procedure adhering to established electrodiagnostic and lab standards (per standard policy manual).

    The EEG Technician I is responsible for reporting critical findings to the physician.

    The above process is to be completed with primary emphasis on safety of the patient, and ensuring a quality study.

    The EEG Technician I is also responsible for maintaining patient and department related documentation.

    This is a training position in which the incumbent will be provided supervision and direction in the appropriate methods to operate EEG machines, recognize issues and take appropriate action to resolve, to ensure quality recordings while maintaining patient safety at all times.


    Education:

    Required:
    High School diploma or equivalent.


    Preferred:
    Completed two years of college or Associates Degree in health care


    Experience:

    Required:
    Minimum of 1 year experience in a patient care position. Experience must demonstrate ability to effectively work both independently and within a team environment.


    Preferred:
    One year experience in the field of Neurodiagnostics, such as:

    Work in an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) setting including correct placement of non-invasive electrodes and monitoring EMU patients

    Placement of non-invasive electrodes and monitoring long-term ICU-EEG studies (may be referred to as critical care monitoring)


    Monitoring of continuous and long-term EEG studies including but not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies to become familiar with and recognize clinical and sub-clinical seizures, normal variants to understand the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, to identify various types of artifacts, learning appropriate action necessary to correct.

    Observing and troubleshooting EEG record to maintain quality and making corrections as appropriate to maintain quality, such as impedance checks and detecting salt bridges

    First aid for seizures

    Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration


    Required:
    BLS completed prior to going to the unit/ department and maintained going forward


    Department Position Summary:

    Responsibilities and Duties:
    EEG Technician I is responsible for performing electroencephalographic (EEG) procedures ordered by a physician.

    The EEG Technician I communicates effectively with patients, physicians, and other department staff members to obtain and provide information regarding study activities.

    The EEG Technician I prepares and maintains department and patient-specific documentation in an organized manner. May contact patients to confirm appointments, schedule studies and related.


    Incumbent sets up equipment to conduct studies, prepares patient by describing study to allay anxiety/concern, attaches non-invasive leads to read electrical activity, operates equipment and monitors/watches ongoing long-term EEG studies.

    These may include assignments within epilepsy monitoring unit, ICU or other general medical setting. Monitors for clinical and subclinical seizures, notifying higher classified technicians and/or physician in accordance with operating protocol for seizures. Recognizes and identifies key differences between epileptic and non-epileptic event.


    Recognizes and takes appropriate action to provide or assist in seizure response and first aid for patients who exhibit signs of seizure.
