    Description
    Job DescriptionOrion Marine Group has an immediate opening for a Mechanic Helper in Channelview, TX. This position is accountable for providing support to skilled craft workers at marine project locations for Orion Marine Construction. Incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of tasks for Welders, Carpenters, Electricians, Mechanics and other skilled workers.

    Typically, they will work closely with a Craft Foreman, Crane Operator, Boat Captain, Welders, Laborers, and other site field personnel.


    Specific Responsibilities:
    Works as assigned by the Craft Foreman to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine construction projects.

    Assists skilled craft workers such as Welders, Carpenters, Electricians, Mechanics or other skilled craft workers in performing their assigned duties.

    Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs. Responsible and accountable for incumbent's own personal safety.
    Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any others incumbent comes in contact with.

    Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed.

    Mechanic Helper DutiesMoves work pieces, tools and supplies, manually or by hand truck.

    Lifts, moves supplies, parts, tools and equipment as directed, either manually or by using hoist, pry bars, wrenches, hammer or wedges.

    Cleans work pieces to remove impurities, such as oil, grease, gaskets and rust using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper or chemical solutions.

    Connects air hoses and eclectic cords, from outlets needed to perform daily job task. Starts gasoline engines to activate air supply when helping on field service work. Paints engine in shop after they have been rebuilt and tested.
    Keeps work areas clean shop or truck.
    Learns the duties of becoming a trained and skilled mechanic.
    Applies all safety and company polices daily.
    Performs other related duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision.
    Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

    Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and Company policies and procedures, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.

    Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).


    Position Requirements:


    A minimum of one (1) year construction or craft worker helper field experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the job is required.

    Previous experience in Welding, Electrical, Mechanical or Carpentry is desirable but not required.


    The incumbent must:
    Be able to communicate effectively and work well with other employees.
    Be able to understand and follow specific directions from supervision.

    Be able to submit to and successfully complete any specific safety or job training that may be required by the customer, the job and/or the contract with client.

    Have the ability to work without close supervision.

    Be capable of working within standards of accuracy as dictated by the customerThe Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace.

    Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSThe incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

    The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.

    This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

    The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.

    Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

    In addition, Helpers must also be capable of:

    Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parametersStanding, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of timeRepetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40'-50'Working in confined spacesWorking at elevated heightsLifting alone objects up to 50 lbs.
