Departmental Overview


The Angelo Coast Range Reserve is an 8051-acre natural history reserve in Northern Mendocino County, 3 hours north of the Bay Area and a 30 minutes' drive from Laytonville.

A site within the UC Natural Reserve System (UCNRS) managed by UC Berkeley, Angelo serves the mission of the UCNRSto contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service.

The Reserve has rugged topography, and vegetation that grades from riparian alders through stands of old growth Douglas fir, coast redwoods and mixed hardwood-conifer forest to chaparral at the higher elevations.


The primary work location for this position is at the Angelo Coast Range Reserve in Mendocino County, 30 minutes from Laytonville.

Responsibilities:

Communicates with Reserve Steward and Faculty Director on a regular basis to set goals and objectives. Under general direction of the Faculty Director, develops and monitors budget, human resources and space planning. Coordinates activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and participants. Provides physical assistance to Steward to sustain functions of the Reserve.

Ensures as far as possible the safety of reserve users and staff, and protection of reserve biota, ecosystems, and infrastructure.

Represents the Campus in developing partnerships with the local community, non
- governmental organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies. Develops and maintains positive relations with agencies, tribes, and community organizations interested in environmental science, conservation, and management in the Eel watershed and the California North Coast. Hosts and coordinates the Angelo Reserve Advisory Board. Applies for grants and seeks donor support to support reserve infrastructure and support the Angelo Reserve's missions of education, research and outreach.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of ecosystem science and management, including ecologically sensitive practices and safety and regulatory compliance. Analytical and report preparation skills to support proposal writing and to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements. Ability to raise funds and manage budgets. Ability to facilitate and collaborate with a diverse group of constituencies on long
- and short
- term reserve activities, programs, planning, and fundraising. Ability to reside at or near the Reserve when on duty. Near daily presence from May to October, except for brief intervals on UC business, or on authorized days off and vacation periods.


Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training First Aid and CPR. Environmental Health and Safety.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with administration and budget management, staff supervision, facilities and equipment operations and maintenance, land stewardship, and resource monitoring. Knowledge of facility planning, building construction, project management, and contract management. Ability to problem solve both personnel and technical issues at field stations. Skills in leadership, motivation of staff, public speaking, team-building, and understanding of diversity and equity issues.
