Definition:
This is specialized work providing for the protection of civilian/commercial aviation passengers, visitors, aircraft, employees and facilities.
Work involves specialized security requirements of an airport including traffic direction, assisting with the arrest and detention of persons suspected of violating local, state or federal laws or regulations, vehicular and foot patrols, report writing and participation in training sessions on airport related issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following:
- Provides ongoing surveillance of airport facility buildings and the surrounding grounds
- Provides security protection for civilian/commercial aviation, aircraft and passengers.
- Assists Airport Operations personnel.
- Provides vehicle escorts in the Airport Operations Area.
- Investigates incidents and documents events in a report format.
- Coordinates law enforcement and security airport staff, airport security personnel and work with City, County, State and Federal Law Enforcement agencies.
- Assists in providing medical assistance (first aid) as needed until emergency medical technicians arrive at the scene.
- Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the public, vendors, contractors, and agency staff
- Renders assistance to motorists as needed.
- Inspects buildings and responds to fire and burglary alarms.
- Handles multiple tasks with shifting priorities, occasional interruptions of planned work activities such as phone calls, citizen contacts, and unplanned events.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements:
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations governing the use, security and operation of airports.
- Applicable motor vehicle laws.
- Airport grounds, facilities, access gates and alarm locations
- The SBIAA Personnel and other applicable Policies.
- System and radio procedures to communicate with the airport tower airport and staff.
- Reports and forms used by Airport Security, including proper completion, and appropriate paperwork for various situations as needed to document activities and offenses.
Ability to:
- Use firearms with sufficient accuracy required to pass the handgun qualifications requirements for law enforcement officers as needed to maintain Carry Concealed Weapon permit.
- Communicate effectively with the public, airport personnel and other law enforcement agencies.
- Communicate in writing to prepare clear reports of security incidents and related activity.
- Read and comprehend information such as supervisor directives, SOPs, criminal codes, and training materials as needed to learn new procedures, remain up to date on laws.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Demonstrate power of observation and memory to accurately recall incidents.
- Use reasonable tact, initiative, and judgment within general policy and legal guidelines.
- Determine priorities according to changing conditions, analyze and resolve work problems and situations, and to institute quick, effective, and responsible courses of action.
Education and/or Experience:
Pre-employment Requirement:
Must be an active law enforcement officer or retired law enforcement officer in good standing.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess a valid California State Driver License.
- Maintain security clearances consistent with airport requirements and federally mandated security clearances where required.
- Must have the ability to obtain a BSIS Guard Card, Permit for Exposed Carry Card, and certification for chemical agents and batons within 30 days of employment (taser optional)
- Complete and maintain First Aid and CPR Certification
- Completion of a 10panel drug screen for all substances deemed illegal by the Federal Government
Physical requirements:
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various agency sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the telephone or radio.
Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
