GBLAs Eviction Protection Programs Attorney will provide civil legal representation in housing-related matters for low-income litigants who remain unrepresented and when the other party has an attorney, this position will focus on residents located in the Bakersfield area.
The attorney will carry a personal caseload, litigating unlawful detainer cases which includes: client interviews; drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, briefs, and correspondence; negotiating with outside parties; representing clients in court and conducting trials; Providing legal counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals regarding evictions and related matters; Act as a resource regarding unlawful detainer cases and other housing issues.
In partnership with other GBLA units and outside agencies to provide comprehensive advocacy In addition to serving clients directly, the attorney will have the opportunity to expand access to justice through varied activities such as community legal education outreach and training and collaboration through community and client groups as well as other government and non-government agencies.
Qualifications to become an Attorney with GBLA
Qualified candidates must be licensed to practice law in California, and in good standing.
Experience or willingness to learn and practice in the field of Domestic Violence.
Experience with litigation or willing to acquire litigation skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people at all levels, internally and externally
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Programs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Westlaw.
High degree of initiative and willingness to work collaboratively with others;
Ability to supervise support staff
Ability to travel throughout Kern County
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver's License and valid Vehicle Insurance.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, not required.
Compensation and Benefits:
Exempt position with an annual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience ($71,963 - $80,995). Generous benefits package, a 37.5-hour workweek, paid sick and vacation leave. 100% employer-paid medical premium for employee (dependent coverage optional though a Sec 125 plan paid by employee) 100% employer-paid premium dental and life insurance for employee and dependents. 100% employer-paid long/short term disability for employee. The employee also has the option to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan, employee-only contributions.
