Job Description and Duties


Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team that protects the environment and assists with decision making about conservation and water resources? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW) Bay Delta Region is seeking motivated people who are proficient in fisheries ecology that have strong organizational, writing, communication, and analytical skills to assist with environmental reviews and permitting focused on water resource and water infrastructure projects.

The incumbent will serve in the Habitat Conservation Program as part of a dedicated team focused on water infrastructure projects.

Work includes pre-consultation; expedited environmental review and permitting; and water resource project outreach, education, and coordination across internal and external partners with consideration for water rights, groundwater management, and climate extremes including drought and flood.

This position serves to proactively address potential water resource and water infrastructure project issues for expedited and efficient review and permitting of projects.

The incumbent may also be responsible for permitting and CEQA review of non-water resource projects on an as-needed basis.

Specified activities will require knowledge or development of knowledge of California fish and wildlife resources, ecological principles, lake and stream processes, applicable permitting, and environmental laws, CDFW administrative procedures and policies, and understanding applicable legislation pertaining to.

The incumbent applies knowledge of environmental impacts, and will participate in difficult and complicated negotiations. Public contacts made in the course of this work are highly sensitive and involve a wide variety of stakeholders.


The Environmental Scientist staff, would be located out of one of several locations within the region (Fairfield, Stockton, Santa Rosa, or Napa) and perform under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor to work in a collaborative setting on renewable energy projects and work through conservation issues as a result.

Bay Delta Region includes the Legal Delta and nine counties (Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano,San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Napa)

Focal species for conservation planning includes Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Steelhead Trout, Sturgeon, Delta Smelt, and Longfin Smelt.

Working Conditions
Use of a desktop or laptop computer for several hours each day. Completion of office tasks requires sitting, standing, and walking to other locations. Attendance at meetings and participation in conference or video calls. The position may require travel throughout the State including overnight travel, early mornings, and/or late nights. Field visits may involve work in inclement weather and hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain. A valid California's driver's license is required to drive to meetings and field sites. Requires use of 4-wheel drive vehicle (including all-terrain vehicle).

The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.

Based on operational need at the time of the job offer, this position may potentially be headquartered at any of the CDFW, Bay Delta Region offices at the following locations:
Fairfield, Stockton, Napa, CA. This position offers the possibility of a telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.
