Position Title:
Wastewater Department Operator/ Laborer


Statement of Duties


Technical and administrative work in the operation of the town's Waste Water Treatment plant; all other related work as required.


Supervision


Works under the general supervision of the Chief Operator and Manager who provides work orders and indicates projects or work needed to be done.

On the job, incumbent works with a degree of independence, but must observe departmental rules, regulations and standard operating procedures including safety measures.

Technical and policy problems or changes in procedures are discussed with supervisor.


Job Environment

  • Pump station, system and chemical operations and control work is performed under shop and field conditions. Occupational risks include electric shock, ground caveins, explosions, chemical burns, sunburn, frostbite and exposure to loud noises.
  • Use of a light truck or automobile is required.
  • Incumbent has occasional contact with the public, usually in person.
  • Workload fluctuates with limited predictability throughout the year.
  • Work requires inspecting, testing or evaluation compliance with established criteria and the use of specialized techniques and equipment.
  • Performs highly responsible duties requiring independent judgment and initiative in maintaining the town's wastewater facilities.
  • Errors could result in a delay or loss of service, personal injury, injury to others, monetary loss, damage to building or equipment and legal repercussions.

Position Functions

Essential Functions

  • The essential function or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position._
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs pump station, collection system, chemical operations control, and waste water treatment plant.
  • Ensures wastewater quality in compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepares chemical reports and performs sample testing.
  • Installs, inspects and repairs pumps, motors and equipment utilized in the operations of a waste water treatment plant and pump stations and collection system; uses tools and machinery to dig up road and remove/replace parts and to re-pave roads as needed.
  • Maintains pump station and grounds, keeps area clean, mows lawn, and paints.
  • Operates and maintains department vehicles, tools and equipment.
  • Answers inquiries and handles complaints from the public.
  • Incumbent is on call for emergencies 24 hours a day and every 4th week for weekend coverage.
  • Strong Computer skills
  • Performs similar or related work as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Physical and Mental Requirements


Working conditions involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, toxins, fumes, machinery, electricity, and water more than 2/3 of the time.

Frequently required to lift up to 100 pounds, occasionally lifts more than 100 pounds.

Walking, standing, talking/listening, use of hands, reaching, climbing/balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and sitting are required up to 2/3 of the time.

Normal vision is required.


Education and Experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Incumbent should have knowledge of hydraulics; the ability to operate heavy equipment, light equipment, various tools, and office machines.


Strong computer skills, and the desire and ability to attend advanced Computer and Scada Systems programing and maintenance schooling. Incumbent should have strong problem solving and prevention skills; good communication, customer service and organizational skills.

From $26.23 per hour
