General Statement of the Job & Essential Functions:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Assists with circulation duties, to include, checking books in and out, recording item status, registering patrons for a borrower's card, preparing books for shelving, and receiving and logging payments of overdue fines or fees; advises patrons of library rules, regulations, programs and services.


Provides assistance to readers in the use of reference tools such as bibliographies and computer catalogs; reserves books and other materials as requested by patrons, and notifies patrons on the availability of reserved materials; determines status of loaned materials and fines owed on overdue materials, and prepares and mails overdue notices.


Maintains monthly display board, and displays featured at circulation desk; prepares, coordinates and sets up Adult Activity Stations and Adult Passive Programs; maintains monthly outreach calendar and weekly transit log; and updates periodicals and advertisement on social media.


Shelves books and materials in accordance with standardized library filing system; and distributes new materials; maintains periodical and newspaper shelves; sorts and purges outdated materials and files from system and designated library section, and recommends new material.


Processes and enters new material into computers; attaches and stamps pockets and spines on books and replaces or attaches labels and plastic jackets to books, DVD's and other materials; assists with conducting special library programs for school children and other groups; and maintains a quiet and orderly environment for library patrons.

Performs other related work as required. Individual assignments will be determined by supervisor based on current workload and department needs.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


Knowledge of Job:
Has working knowledge of books, magazines, and related materials available to the public. Has working knowledge of the library's filing system and various types of informational materials in the library. Has some knowledge of standard office and clerical practices. Is able to use standard office machines. Is able to maintain clerical records. Is able to follow established procedures and perform work requiring some detail. Is able to instruct patrons in the use of various office machines and library reference materials. Is able to lift and carry objects of moderate weight. Is able to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions. Is able to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with library patrons and the general public. Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.


Quality of Work:
Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts within department and division, and with co
- workers and the general public.

Maintains effective and efficient output of all duties and responsibilities as described under "Essential Job Functions."


Dependability:
Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and meeting deadlines. Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, city policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Accepts accountability for meeting assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.


Attendance:
Attends work regularly and adheres to city policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and time-off requests.


Initiative and Enthusiasm:
Maintains an enthusiastic, self-reliant and self-starting approach to meet job responsibilities and accountability.

Strives to anticipate work to be done and initiates proper and acceptable direction for completion of work with a minimum of supervision and instruction.

Accepts supervisory instruction and direction and strives to meet the goals and objectives of same.

Questions such instruction and direction when clarification of results or consequences are justified, i.e., poor communications, variance with city policy or procedures, etc.

Offers suggestions and recommendations to encourage and improve cooperation between all staff persons within the department.
