General Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the Children's Center Director, the Food Services Supervisor is responsible for the implementation of the nutritional program meeting the needs of all children enrolled in the program.

This includes meal planning meeting established guidelines, ordering lunch, supplies and equipment from outside vendors, preparing breakfast and snacks, overseeing all meal delivery to classrooms, ensuring appropriate maintenance, sanitation and safety standards within the work area.

The SDSU Children's Center is NAEYC accredited

and adheres to the NAEYC Code of Conduct.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions

  • Maintains knowledge of USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements and ensures the Center is complaint with the regulations
  • Creates menus, then orders, receives and prepares all foods in accordance with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines
  • Creates menus to meet USDA CACFP guidelines and individual dietary needs of children with allergies or specific medical requests from the child's physician
  • Ensures accuracy of weights and measures for all food components served in accordance with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines, including those produced by outside vendors
  • Arranges substitute coverage for staff when necessary, including cooking as needed
  • Conducts regular analysis of food costs and other CACFP costs to ensure maximum utilization of CACFP funding
  • Prepares documents for reimbursement, provides to accounting for review, and enters meal data in CNIPS by the 10th of each month
  • Maintains documentation of meal count data reimbursements in a secure location
  • Reviews Menu Production Sheets monthly to ensure nutrition requirements are being met
  • Makes recommendations for needed changes to supervisor to meet established guidelines as stipulated
  • Conducts regular walk through of the kitchen area, inspecting all equipment and materials to ensure proper maintenance, appearance and sanitation according to established guidelines and procedures
  • Ensures preparation of needed work orders or repair reports on proper forms with all pertinent information completed. Monitors the progress of requested work and priorities for work as required and reports to Children's Center Director all updated work priorities
  • Makes recommendations to supervisor for improvements to facilities and equipment
  • Works with staff to maintain a safe environment for children, staff and to report known safety problems to supervisor
  • Assists in the development and implementation of a comprehensive package of promotional efforts for the Children's Center
  • Assists in defining target markets
  • Monitors and updates web page content relating to the food program to ensure it is compelling and accurate
  • Makes suggestions for improvements to the overall Children's Center web page to ensure it is compelling and accurate
  • Prepares written reports, as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:


Education:


  • High School Diploma required. Bachelor's degree and/or AA or AS (or equivalent) (preferably in Child Development, Nutrition, Health Education, or Health Science) preferred

Experience:


  • Minimum one year working in Child and Family Development required
  • Minimum one year supervisory experience required. Experience supervising and working directly with students preferred
  • Minimum two years of experience in menu planning and food preparation required
  • Minimum one year working with the Child and Adult Care Food program (CACFP) required
  • Proficient with Excel and Word software
  • Must have experience in supporting families with nutrition needs

License & Certifications:

  • Current certification for Food Service Manager Training required
  • Food Handler Training certification required
  • Valid CA driver's license with a clear driving record

Trainings (within first 30 days):

  • Universal Health Precautions, Bloodborne Pathogens and infectious waste disposal
  • Site safety and emergency procedures including fire and earthquake drills
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention for Supervisors
  • Data Security & Privacy

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of the most uptodate nutritional standards for children, including portion sizes
  • Keeps current of new issues and research in the field of early childhood nutrition
  • Works in an independent manner without undue supervision

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of USDA Guidelines for nutrition and meal service provided to children 6 months to 5 years of age
  • Knowledge of NAEYC best practices, licensing requirements, child abuse reporting, universal precautions, safety practices
