Position overview

Position title:
Flow Cytometry Core Specialist (Associate Specialist and Specialist)


Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section
D. Qualifications of the CAPM Specialist Series The posted). UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, _Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year_.

"Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500 - $106,500.

Full-time (100%)


Position duration:
Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description

  • Flow Cytometry Expertise_
  • Independent operation of cell sorters; experience on the BD Aria or Symphony preferred.
  • Customer Service_
  • Assist core clientele in the acquisition and sorting of flowcytometry samples.
  • Assist clients with the design of flow cytometry experiments, including appropriate choice of instrumentation as well as fluorochromes appropriate for the experiment.
  • Ability to assist clients with data analysis such as FlowJo is desirable but not required.
  • Perform daily and monthly QC on core instrumentation;interpret and report deviations of QC; and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of core instrumentation.
  • Training and Education_
  • Train students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff on the flowcytometry machines.
  • Stay current with new technologies and developments in the flow community through research, attendance of conferences, and workshops.
  • Effectively train and communicate with clients on the use of flow cytometry analyzers, cell sorters, and data analysis interpretation.
General Lab Skills

  • Perform calculations for preparation of lab solutions and reagents.
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

Qualifications
Degree, which may be a U.S.

degree or an equivalent foreign degree, must be in cell biology, developmental biology, cancer biology, stem cell biology, or a related field.


For appointment to the associate specialist rank:

  • MA/MS degree or a BA/BS degree and a minimum of six years post-baccalaureate experience that relates to the advertised position.
  • At least two years of experience in a lab technician role with experience in using flowcytometry and/or managing machines is required.

For appointment to the specialist rank:

  • MA/MS degree or a BA/BS degree and a minimum of ten years post-baccalaureate experience that relates to the advertised position. At least five years of experience in a lab technician role with experience in using flowcytometry and/or managing machines is required. A doctoral degree may substitute for 4-5 years of work experience.
