REAL Journey Academies (RJA) is a Non-Profit charter school management organization designed to significantly increase college entrance and graduation rates for underserved students in the Inland Empire.

Job Purpose:


Under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer, the Director of Nutrition Services is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of the food service program.

The Director plans, organizes and directs the activities of the Nutrition Services operation, including the school cafeterias and snack bars and any other food service for the district; employs, trains, and supervises school food service personnel; establishes work standards; safeguards the fiscal solvency of the program by utilizing cost containment measures and revenue-generating activities; administers the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, After School Snack Program, Summer Meals Program and any other programs as necessary; performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Establish quality standards for the presentation and service of food.
Implement an organization-wide customer service-driven philosophy that focuses on value and student satisfaction.
Establish procedures to ensure that food is prepared and served in a sanitary and safe environment.
Develop and integrate employee safety regulations into all phases of the Organization's Nutrition Services operation.
Establish procedures and policies for risk management.
Manage measurable financial objectives and goals.

Implement efficient management techniques to ensure all records and supporting documentation are maintained in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and policies.

Develop procedures to ensure the food production system provides safe and nutritious food of high quality.
Ensure operational procedures for efficient and effective food production and distribution.
Implement a cost-effective procurement system.

Develop purchasing guidelines to ensure purchased food and supplies reflect product knowledge, customer preferences, District needs, policies, and nutrition objectives.

Establish standards for receiving, storing, and inventorying food and non-food supplies based on sound principles of management.
Provide technical assistance and training for Nutrition Services operation personnel, school administrators, and other school support staff.
Develop guidelines for providing services in response to disaster or emergency situations.
Develop cost-effective menus that maintain nutrition integrity and meet all local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
Assesses customer preferences, industry trends, and current research to plan menus that encourage participation in the nutrition services program.
Work with school staff, teachers, parents, and physicians to plan menus for children with special nutritional needs.
Employ management techniques to maintain an effective and efficient program.

Develop short and long-term goals through strategic planning for the Nutrition Services operation program that supports the philosophy and policies of the REAL Journey Academies, Board of Directors.

Implement policies and procedures to ensure effective program operation.
Develop a long-range program for establishing professional status for Nutrition Services' role in the education community.
Review current research information to determine health and nutrition-related trends and management developments.
Develop innovative program changes and expansions.
Implement personnel policies and procedures according to local, state, and federal regulations and laws.
Develops job performance standards that provide for performance improvement.
Establishes standards for the professional development of department personnel.

Assist with designing and planning of the nutrition program to ensure high-quality customer service, wholesome food production, and efficient workflow.

Determines equipment needs and specifications consistent with program needs and budget.
Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure environmental responsibility.
Establish a waste management system that is effective, economical, and environmentally safe.
Develop a marketing plan to attract students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and the community.
Conduct on-going evaluation of the food and nutrition program marketing plan.

Communicate program information to encourage and secure support for the school food and nutrition program from the REAL Journey Academies Board of Directors, administrators, faculty, students, parents, and the community.

Implement a plan for providing nutrition services for special functions consistent with REAL Journey Academies policies.
Implements management information systems that increase the productivity and efficiency of the school food and nutrition operation.
