Assists plant operations personnel with the drilling, handling, and movement of petroleum coke from the El Segundo Refinery. Performs general cleanup duties and other work as directed.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Safe and efficient operation of pumps, heavy impact drivers, large overhead cranes, large Coke movement belt transfer system, and other specialized equipment associated with the refinery de-coking process, including hydraulic and air-driven equipment
  • Computer-related entry for lab and equipment monitoring, turnovers, and routine duties
  • Routine maintenance of related refinery equipment
  • Reading, comprehension, communication, and following all safety and environmental rules and regulations
  • Physical and Environmental Demands
  • The Coke Handler Trainee will work in an environment that requires the following abilities:
  • Rotating shifts (scheduled 12hour shifts) including weekends and holidays. Occasional overtime is required.
  • Routine carrying and lifting of 50 lbs, pushing and pulling force of 100 lbs.
  • Job duties can involve physical situations which include standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing ladders/or stairs, and maintaining balance. Situations can involve confined spaces, heights up to 250 feet, and noise over 85 decibels. Occasionally, duties involve wearing a respirator breathing apparatus.
  • Job duties are indoor /outdoor. Outdoor conditions can vary in temperature and humidity.
  • The following materials may be present in the work area and environment: Hydrogen vapors and liquids, hydrogen sulfide, coke dust, ammonia, benzene, petroleum lubricants, gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, ETP sludge, wastewater, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, methanol, MTBE and crude oil.
  • This is a Safety Sensitive position.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Must pass a pre-employment medical and physical examination, drug screen, and background check.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with liquids and gas processing equipment and procedures
  • Prior Refinery, chemical, steam boiler, power generation, brewery construction, or similar work experience
  • Prior experience with conveyors, pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems
  • Mechanical and computer skills are a plus
  • Relocation Options:
  • Relocation will not be considered within Chevron parameters.
  • International Considerations:
  • Expatriate assignments will not be considered.
  • The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $43.50
