The Nonprofit Assistant Controller will be assigned to work with a variety of clients from both charter schools and non-profit organizations.

The role serves as the Nonprofit Assistant Controller and external client lead and requires strong communication skills, project management skills, knowledge of accrual and cash-based accounting, and the ability to partner with key stakeholders.

The Nonprofit Assistant Controller oversees all aspects of the finances for a portfolio of clients. In this consulting role, the Nonprofit Assistant Controller regularly exercises independent judgment on client financial matters.


Although the scope of work is different for every client, the Nonprofit Assistant Controller will be responsible for Accounting, Finance, Team Performance, and Client Consulting activities as well as Controller level tasks, and other tasks and duties outlined below.


Your Duties
1) Accounting

  • Audit_
  • Act as a liaison between client and audit firm
  • Oversee preparation of audit packages
  • Perform quality review and finalize audit packages before release
  • Implement audit findings.
2) Finance

  • Analysis and Reporting_
  • Report on the current financial status to client leadership.
  • Review and finalize annual budget and recommendations
  • Review and finalize financial reports.
3) Team Performance- Ensure deliverables are executed to the scope of work.

  • Manage staffing needs for client portfolio.
  • Serve as the point of escalation and resolution for the client team.
  • Escalate changes in organizational leadership, the scope of work, and financial trends to the department leadership.
4) Client Consulting- Manage multiple clients virtually.

  • Engage and consult with client leadership on financial strategies and initiatives.
  • Monitor and track financial goals for trends.
  • Present results of the financial analysis and make recommendations to client leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Participate and present at Board meetings.
  • Serve as the point of escalation and resolution for managers on services and delivery issues.

Your Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 8+ years of accounting, financial reporting, and financial management experience.
  • 3+ years prior experience managing and prioritizing the work of direct reports or project team members.
  • Prior experience working in a nonprofit organization required.
  • Prior experience working in a school or socially responsible organization is required.
  • Prior management of multiple projects and clients is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills.

You Should Know:


  • Microsoft Office 36
  • QuickBooks, Intacct, FundEZ, or similar accounting software
  • Payroll Management Software (ADP, Paychex, or similar)
