    About the College/Unit/Department


    The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and the University of Georgia partnered to create a four-year medical school campus in Athens to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians that threatens the health of Georgians.

    Medical Partnership has been educating physicians in Athens since 2010.


    On February 13, 2024, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized the University of Georgia to establish a new, independently accredited School of Medicine in Athens.

    Position Summary


    The Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs provides leadership for the planning and implementation of all components of academic affairs in the new University of Georgia (
    UGA) School of Medicine (
    SOM) across Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education, and includes oversight of Accreditation, Admissions, Curriculum, Assessment, Student Affairs, Academic Success and Enrichment, Faculty Affairs, and continuous quality improvement (
    CQI).

    This key leadership position will report directly to the Dean of the


    UGA

    SOM
    and is a member of the Dean's leadership team. The Senior Associate Dean leads and oversees the academic affairs offices to meet


    UGA
    SOM's mission and strategic plan.

    The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of associate or full professor commensurate with experience.

    Additional Requirements

    Minimum of 10 years of medical education experience at an


    LCME-accredited medical school.

    Minimum of 7 years of leadership and academic administration experience at a senior level that includes academic and student affairs management and administration.

    Candidates must have demonstrated the expertise appropriate to attain the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
    Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

    Proven track record of excellence in education, including first-hand experience developing and implementing preclinical and clinical medical education curricula.
    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

    Knowledge of

    accreditation and accountability.
    Familiarity with community-based medical education.
    Strong administrative and leadership skills and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate medical education.
    Excellent verbal, written, and group presentation skills.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Report directly to the Dean of the


    UGA
    School of Medicine (
    SOM) and serve on the Dean's leadership team.

    Provide leadership and oversight of all educational and administrative aspects of the MD educational program including faculty affairs and continuous quality improvement (
    CQI).

    Support and mentor the career development of the Associate Deans who are direct reports.
    Ensure the undergraduate medical education curriculum aligns with the School of Medicine's strategic objectives; participate in curriculum evaluation via collaboration with the Associate Dean for Curriculum, the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee, and the Director of Program Evaluation,


    CQI
    and Assessment.
    Oversee the


    UGA
    SOM's


    LCME
    accreditation and assist with UGA's


    SACSCOC
    accreditation.
    Work collaboratively to ensure that all programs meet their respective


    LCME


    accreditation standards; ensure that processes are in place for collecting and evaluating data to verify that each student receives a quality education.

    Meet at least monthly with student leadership to address student concerns and update students on issues such as building safety, mistreatment, changes to the curriculum, and any policy changes in collaboration with the Associate Deans for Student Affairs and Academic Success.

    Ensure that the

    SOM
    Student Handbook and all education-related policies are reviewed and updated annually.
    Responsible for the strategic management and operational oversight of


    UGA
    SOM's Graduate Medical Education (
    GME) programs.
    Oversee the efforts of the Associate Dean for


    GME
    with the goal of working with clinical partners to increase the number and capacity of


    GME
    programs throughout Georgia.
    Work strategically with the Associate Dean for


    GME
    to identify and create new, fiscally sustainable


    GME
    programs particularly in underserved/rural communities.
    Foster an environment of inclusive excellence and belonging among faculty, staff, and students in all activities.
    Work collaboratively with the Chief Business Officer of the


    UGA

    SOM
    to authorize significant changes in administrative procedures, personnel, and systems.
    Ensure that the education- and student-related components of the


    UGA

    SOM
    policies and procedures are accurate and enforced.
    Review and approve annual budgets submitted by direct reports to the


    UGA

    SOM
    Office of Finance and Administration and any large expenditures during the fiscal year.
    Participate in the search for key administrative positions.
    Analyze and implement national best practices in all facets of education at


    UGA

    SOM.
    Oversee and implement


    UGA
    SOM's strategic plan.
    Work in tandem with the Dean and represent the Dean in assigned functions.
    Other duties and projects as assigned by the Dean.
