    This is an Other Personnel Service (OPS) Certified Nursing Assistant position with the Department of Health in Lee County.

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    This is a OPS Certified Nursing Assistant position under the supervision of the Public Health Services Manager A SES with the Florida Department of Health in Lee County. The incumbent provides public health nursing services for clients in FDOH -Lee clinics. This position is classified as a sensitive position. Incumbent handles protected health information on a need to know basis following Department of Health, HIPAA, and Information Security and Privacy policies and procedures. Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing health information. Responsible to maintain confidentiality, security, privacy and integrity of protected health information. Refers and utilizes DOH This position has access to the following information sets: Medical Records, Laboratory Reports, Immunizations, and the electronic health records system.

    Assists APRNs and other nurses in the service of patients with obtaining medical histories and simple procedures, such as recording heights, weights, blood pressures, hemoglobin screening, and temperatures.

    Prepares clients for their examinations, directs patient flow in Community Health clinics, assists during the examination, and provides clean up procedures and sterilization of the equipment both during and at the completion of the clinic. Acts as a chaperone when needed.

    Assists in collection of laboratory specimens, including blood specimens via proper phlebotomy technique, urine specimens, and swabs for STI screening.

    Maintains sufficient supplies for clinics. Maintains rooms and equipment used in clinics and keeps a clean working environment for patients, physicians, APRNs, and other nurses following OSHA guidelines for hazardous wastes. Assembles and distributes information packets to patients, as needed.

    Lab duties include, but are not limited to the following: provides back up in laboratory within the parameters of job skills, records daily refrigerator/freezer temperatures, obtains specimens from all rooms, prepares specimens, i.e., centrifuging, log out all specimens, and prepares all specimens for shipping. Autoclaves supplies as needed.

    Participates in in-service training and meetings in order to prepare for expanded service in the generalized public health programs.

    Prepares biweekly Leave/Attendance records and daily Employee Activity Record (EAR) for supervisor's review.

    Performs other duties as assigned. including assignment during disaster.

    Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:
    • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
    • Knowledge of principles, practices & procedures
    • Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation & grammar usage
    • Knowledge of standard business formats & styles for letters & business forms
    • Knowledge of basic pharmaceutical terminology and calculations.
    • Knowledge of basic computer software.
    • Skill in operating a personal computer
    • Skill in using medical instruments or testing equipment.
    • Skill in taking blood pressure readings
    • Ability to perform phlebotomy and process lab specimen using universal precautions.
    • Ability to operate general office equipment
    • Ability to follow office procedures & practices
    • Ability to organize & maintain filing systems
    • Ability to handle telephone calls in a courteous & effective manner
    • Ability to plan, organize & coordinate work assignments
    • Ability to understand, interpret & apply applicable rules, regulations, policies & procedures
    • Ability to prioritize individual workload.
    • Ability to interview patients and obtain a complete medical history.
    • Ability to follow instructions.
    • Ability to keep accurate records.
    • Ability to distribute prescribed medications.
    • Ability to communicate effectively.
    • Ability to frequently use telephone, computer, copier and small hand tools, i.e.; stapler, scissors, etc.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
    • Bilingual Preferred
    Other job-related requirements for this position:
    • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
    • Selected immunizations or titers and/or periodic screening for tuberculosis may be recommended for this position.
    • This position will abide by all state and federal laws, rules, and DOH policies and procedures.
    • Incumbent must possess a valid Florida Driver License and have a motor vehicle to carry out these duties.
    • Transporting Confidential Information: This position is authorized to transport confidential information outside of established DOH-Lee facilities and must comply with parameters defined in DOHP 50-10.
