Description
Staff members in this position provide assistance to the classroom teacher and facilitate pupil instruction. Employees in this position work to provide necessary instruction, training, services and individual attention to pupils.

The assistant is monitored by the teacher in charge of the class, who, with their supervisor, reviews the work through observation and conferences.


Education/Experience Requirements:


  • Bachelor's Degree with teacher qualification is preferred, but not required

OR

  • A minimum of two years of college in the education field

Essential Job Functions:

Major highlights of the position requirements are noted below. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required.


To assist the teacher with:
- individual and group instruction and daily lesson assignments
- establishing instructional goals and objectives; testing and evaluating student programs
- various phases of behavior modification and classroom management programs
- preparing dittos, correcting assignments, organizing learning centers and bulletin boards
- performing related work as required

  • Ability to instruct students in an effective manner
  • Communicate with teachers, support staff and parents
  • Assumes responsibility for the class and instructional activities in teacher's absence
  • Monitors students during non instructional activities during the school day (example: lunch & recess duty, etc.)
  • Actively participates at scheduled staff meetings and serves on educational committees
  • Performs other duties within the scope of employment as assigned by the appropriate administrator

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Some knowledge of curriculum and instructional materials
  • Valid Driver's License and good driving record

Work Environment and Primary Work Locations:

  • Classroom environment
Normal Working Hours: 7:30am to 3:30pm, 8:00am to 4:00pm; Monday - Friday

  • Moderate Physical exertion

Physical Considerations:


  • Ability to participate in sport and other activities with students.
  • Ability to maintain composure in crisis with students and perform Safe Physical Management techniques in accordance with accepted agency guidelines.
  • Physical abilities must include lifting, walking, climbing stairs, and engaging in physical restraints
