    General Statement of Job
    Under general supervision, performs technical work in overseeing the security of the College's network infrastructure.

    The work involves daily monitoring of network activity, threat assessments; planning, and directing activities related to both our internal and external network infrastructure, connectivity, and network management applications; monitoring the hardware of the college's network to include routers, switches, firewalls, DHCP servers, DNS servers, packet filters, intrusion detection, VOIP, and VPN gateways.

    Reports to the Network Administrator.


    Essential Job Functions

    Monitors daily logs and scans to detect and defend against malicious attacks to the College's infrastructure and ensures that proper level of security is maintained on all network devices.


    Deploys, configures, maintains, troubleshoots, and monitors active network equipment designed to implement security measures

    Analyzes security alerts and bulletins issued by various entities of potential attacks. Reviewing data generated by firewall monitors such as IDS and firewall logs on external or internal intrusion attempts; coordinating corrective action to network systems known to have any security weaknesses or vulnerabilities; and implementing quality of service controls throughout

    Develops and support user security awareness programs, such as KnowB4 for user responses to phishing attempts, Akami DNS monitoring and monitors VPN access by employees and third parties.

    Operates a variety of office and specialized equipment including tone generator, continuity tester, personal computers, printers, network server devices, cable tester, etc.

    Uses a variety of tools and supplies such as diagonal cutters, scissors, stripper, crimper, cable, RJ-45 connectors, hand tools, network tool kit, printer supplies, cable, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Datatel, Track-It, Cisco Works, "sniffer", Corel WordPerfect, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Net Watcher, OGRE, ISS, etc.

    Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Director of Infrastructure Services, all Pitt Community College computer users, faculty department chairs, division heads, technical assistants, OITS computer support staff, etc.


    Determines effectively appropriate hardware and software requirements for various operations.

    Installs new equipment and systems; provides professional, efficient user support and assistance.

    Performs related duties as directed.

    Qualifications or Standards

    Requires an Associate's degree in information technology, networking technology, or related field supplemented by three to five years responsible experience in networking technology; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


    Minimum Training and Experience

    Physical Requirements:

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including various computer equipment, telephone, fax machine, etc.

    Must be able to exert up to forty pounds of force occasionally and/or up to twenty pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve lifting, walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of twenty to forty pounds.

    Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.



    Interpersonal Communications:
    Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving direction and instruction from supervisor. Includes the ability to provide instruction and guidance on technical computer program use to computer users in layman's terms.


    Language Ability:
    Requires ability to read a variety of policies and procedures, instructions, etc. Requires the ability to prepare required documentation and correspondence, etc. with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.


    Intelligence:

    Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.


    Verbal Aptitude:

    Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees.

    Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages including various computer languages.

    Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to use mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time.

    Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.


    Form/Spatial Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.


    Motor Coordination:
    Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery; to operate motor vehicles.


    Manual Dexterity:
    Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


    Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:
    Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.


    Interpersonal Temperament:
    Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.


    Physical Communications:

    Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).



    PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

    Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Information Technology and Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Network Administrator. Has knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of the Community College and other governmental agencies. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Has extensive knowledge in the areas computer networks, diagnostic procedures, software applications, computer operating systems, and hardware maintenance. Has comprehensive knowledge of computer and software terminology used within the department. Has knowledge of the ever-changing technological field and is capable of staying abreast of changes that would improve the performance of all systems. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to offer instruction and advice to system users regarding software use, general policies, methods and regulations pertaining to information services. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical and human relations skills. Is able to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Has knowledge of how to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, computer operations, equipment needs, policies, etc., as they pertain to departmental operations and activities.
