Friendship Shelter is a non-profit homeless services agency founded in 1988 and dedicated to ending homelessness in South Orange County, one person at a time.

Friendship Shelter operates a full spectrum of services to end homelessness, including street outreach, emergency shelter, housing navigation, financial assistance, and permanent housing with supportive services.

Primary Purpose:

The Data Associate will provide support for any data related tasks for the Data and IT Manager.

This position includes technical advising through the data ticketing system, the generation and automation of regular reports, user administration of the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and Coordinated Entry System (CES), and the ability to respond to ad-hoc data and IT requests.

The purpose of the Data Associate is to assist the Data and IT Manager in ensuring data quality and performing data analysis to the end of creating a data and technology driven culture capable of ending homelessness in South Orange County.


Essential Functions:


  • Respond to agency data requests received through the agency's ticketing system in a
timely manner and with accuracy.

  • Act as an HMIS Administrator, which includes, but is not limited to, user management,
user training, responding to data corrections and data reporting, setting up new
programs/services in HMIS, and resolving user issues as the intermediary between the
agency and OCHMIS.

  • Maintain a current working knowledge of HMIS and HUD data collection regulations,
policies and procedures.

  • Cooperatively work with agency staff to correct data quality issues, answer questions,
and provide guidance to ensure data accuracy and data compliance.

  • Produce regular reports using Python, Pandas, SQL, and Microsoft Excel to communicate
project performance metrics and compliance.

  • Perform data entry and cleanup tasks as needed, as well as routine maintenance of
automated reports and dashboards, as needed.


Supervisory Responsibilities
Direct Reports

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities for direct reports.
Indirect Reports

  • This position does not have guidance or mentoring responsibilities for indirect reports.

Driving Requirements

  • Driving is not an essential duty or function of this job, however Data Associates are
required to be in office at least one day per week


Minimum Qualifications _The following are the minimum job-related qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job._

  • At least two years of experience with Python, Pandas and Microsoft Excel.
  • Desire to be a part of a team that is passionately committed to ending homelessness.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Data analysis experience using Python, Pandas, SQL, and Microsoft Excel
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare accurate reports
  • Well organized, detailoriented, and able to multitask
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and technical procedures
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential information
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
