Description

Public Health Specialist Trainee 1, NS (Grade 13): A qualifying bachelor's or higher degree, OR a bachelor's or higher degree including or supplemented by 30 qualifying semester credit hours.


Public Health Specialist 1, Grade 18: above degree requirements, AND two years of experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards; and/or monitoring public health environmental hazards and/or developing methods to control or eliminate such hazards or the spread of disease.

Please note that Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) and Public Health Specialist 1 are different titles.


Duties Description


Public Health Specialists in the Bureau of Community Environmental Health and Food Protection (BCEHFP) enforce the provisions of New York State's Public Health Law and other State and federals laws, rules, and regulations relating to community environmental health and safety.

The BCEHFP develops environmental health regulations and associated program guidance to ensure that core environmental health program standards are achieved.

The incumbent of this position will assist in the implementation and monitoring of public health programs; provide direction, oversight, technical assistance, and training to local health departments; monitor program activities and progress towards contract deliverables; and prepare reports and correspondence.

Positions may be filled in the following program areas:
Housing Hygiene, Food Protection, Recreational Environmental Health, Tobacco Enforcement, or Program Standardization, Evaluation, and Reporting.


Additional Comments
Travel throughout several counties to areas not served by public transportation is required (10%).

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
