    Facilities Management, Grounds Services, seeks a Grounds Crew Chief (Spray Technician - Pest Control) to supervise a crew in the maintenance of grounds and turf management.

    Working Environment


    Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment; weather; and potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.

    Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds.

    Regular use of mowers, trimmers, edgers, shears, spreaders, hoses, hand and power tools/machines. Stand for long periods of time. Walk and inspect campus. Drive university vehicle/cart.


    May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g.

    safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

    Minimum Qualifications


    Five years of grounds maintenance related work experience which includes one (1) year of lead experience; OR, Associate's degree in Horticulture or related field AND three (3) years of grounds maintenance related work experience which includes one year of lead experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

    This position is located at the Tempe campus, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).

    Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.

    Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

    Must pass pre-employment audiogram exam post offer of employment.

    This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.

    Essential Duties


    General:

    • Supervise, assign tasks, and monitor the daily activities of a grounds maintenance crew.
    • Receive instructions from Supervisor and follow maintenance schedule pertaining to the assigned area.
    • Keep daily work logs and assist Supervisor with digital data entry into departmental work order system.
    • Be able to identify public safety issues and mitigate these situations appropriately.
    • Ensure adherence to safety regulations.
    • Monitor equipment performance and notify Supervisor of any concerns or issues.
    • Ensure regular preventative maintenance is performed on all tools and equipment in your care.
    • Ensure crew is staying on task and on schedule every day.
    • Assist with any task to ensure daily schedule is completed on time.
    • Conduct training to subordinates under your direct supervision.
    • Responsible for quality control in assigned areas.
    • Clearly communicate to perform essential duties of the job.

    Specific to Spray Technicians (Pest Crew):

    • Identify public safety issues caused by dangerous wildlife conditions and mitigate these situations appropriately.
    • Adhere to, and provide input on, the University's Integrated Pest Management program.
    • Manage and complete work orders related to pest control in a timely manner.
    • Organize assignments and provide communication for pest control vendors.
    • Purchase necessary chemical and supplies for pest control functions.
    • Routinely inspect landscape plant material for insect populations and damage and apply appropriate control methods.
    • Interact and communicate with customers to facilitate control measures.
    • Transport injured animals to wildlife rehabilitation center.
    • Respond to after-hours calls relating to critical pest control issues.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    DAYS AND SCHEDULE:
    Monday - Friday, 5:00AM - 1:30PM
