The current vacancy is in the
Wastewater division.


The Position


Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled or semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of the City's water distribution system; mechanical and electrical control system work to operate, maintain and repair various machinery, components and facilities of the City's water production and flood control systems; or in the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City's wastewater and storm water systems.

The Water Utility Worker is a multi-position journey-level job classification.

Assignments may be in Water Distribution, Water Production, or Wastewater Operations The Water Utility Worker differs from the Senior Water Utility Worker in that the Water Utility Worker has less experience, expertise, and certification requirements.


Examples of Essential Duties:


  • Performs maintenance of the City's water distribution, water production, or wastewater operations systems
  • Attends safety training; follows the City's policies and procedures; assists with periodic safety inspections; identifies and corrects safety hazards
  • Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices
  • Responds to emergency calls for service on a callout basis; works various hours, including nights and weekends as deemed necessary to meet deadlines and conform with changing priorities
  • Reports to work as scheduled; maintains a regular and consistent attendance record
  • Attends training; supports and actively promotes the City's safety programs; assists with periodic safety inspections; identifies and corrects safety hazards
  • Travels to offsite locations within and outside the City
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

_ When assigned to Wastewater Operations_

  • Performs maintenance and construction tasks to maintain maximum, constant water flow in the wastewater system
  • Cleans and repairs storm drains to prevent flooding
  • Inspects and cleans city sewer lines and storm drain facilities by removing manhole covers and using a variety of industrial wastewater cleaning equipment to remove debris inside sewer lines
  • Assists vacuum truck operator in cleaning of sewer lines
  • Locates, excavates, and installs shoring and repairs broken sewer lines and storm drains as required
  • Reads and understands wastewater system maps
  • Drives or operates pickup trucks, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, hydroflushers, cement mixers, 90 lb. jackhammers, soil compactors, arrow boards, pumps and other equipment
  • Operates and maintains various lift station equipment and facilities throughout the City
  • Operates vehiclemounted equipment in absence of operator
  • Assists in camera duties to inspect lines
  • Assists pump mechanics with repairs of pumps, motors, equipment controls
  • Coordinates traffic control at worksite by properly placing traffic barricades, cones and delineators in traffic situations; performs flagging duties to direct traffic and assists public in routing around the work zone; ensures safety of worksite
  • Assists with general labor duties for the Utilities Division; performs preventative maintenance on work equipment; assists with periodic safety inspections; identifies and corrects safety hazards

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent certificate.


Experience:
Two (2) years' experience in construction or maintenance and repair of water distribution, water production or industrial equipment, or wastewater collection systems


Certifications/License:

Possession of:

_For Wastewater Operations Assignment_

  • A valid California Class B driver
    license and an acceptable driving record are required by time of appointment and throughout employment
  • California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS


Employees regularly assigned/required to drive a City or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program.


Public Employee Disaster Service Worker:

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
