    Hastings Mutual is currently looking for a Casualty Claim Supervisor This is a great opportunity to join and provide supervisory leadership to our Casualty Claim Unit which handles non-litigated Casualty Claims.

    Position Overview

    The Casualty Claim Supervisor provides coaching, development, training, supervision, and business result collection/analysis in a claim unit setting. They will direct claim staff through proper investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and resolution of claims, including the maximization of all recovery opportunities, within the Company's contractual and legal obligations while also ensuring timely service and appropriate payments to our customers.

    This position will manage between five to ten direct reports comprised of Claim Representatives and typically has reserve and settlement authority ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. The individual in this role will also be responsible for controlling outside adjusting and miscellaneous expenses associated with those claims totals.

    Position Location & Schedule Details

    This position is flexible in its location Candidates residing within the greater Hastings, Michigan, will be able to work a hybrid (combination of on-site and work-from-home) schedule as an alternative. Preference will also be given to candidates who reside within our six-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois). Hastings Mutual may consider candidates in other states to work remotely if elements of their application are strong.

    Generally, this role will work within our standard office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

    Position Duties & Responsibilities

    • Manages the claim unit including coaching, training, mentoring, development, performance management, hiring, and disciplinary recommendations across multiple levels of experience.
    • Provides direction and guidance to staff to ensure that they have sufficient knowledge and skill to provide exemplary customer service and resolve claims timely and equitably across all lines of business.
    • Leads staff in providing exceptional customer service in accordance with department standards and corporate service goals.
    • Actively monitors performance, and reviews open and closed claims to ensure that claims are handled according to Company policies and procedures, resulting in an equitable resolution within the Company's contractual and legal liability.
    • Directs and controls the establishment of appropriate claim case reserves to ensure that future costs are accurately assessed, and the company can determine its financial position.
    • Handles or supervises outside vendors, high valued claims, complex claims, or sensitive claims ensuring quality service and a high degree of technical expertise.
    • Maximizes the utilization of company loss and expense-saving programs while directing and monitoring the use of outside vendors to ensure quality service and cost-effectiveness.
    • Manages the salvage process to ensure timely recovery and improve company financial results.
    • Ensures that subrogation opportunities are identified and pursued in order to minimize claim losses and maximize company results.
    • Ensures that staff properly utilizes and documents all files in the claim system of record.
    • Coordinates relevant claim information with Loss Control, Underwriting, Marketing, etc., to maximize the company's effectiveness in avoiding future losses and to better manage the current business.
    • Provides strategic direction for the appropriate adjudication of claims for HMIC ensuring that these claims are resolved in an equitable and cost-effective manner.
    • Serves as an expert resource to others in the Claim department regarding coverage issues, reserves, exposure, settlement value, and strategy.
    • Performs legal research; monitors and distributes pertinent changes in insurance law, tort law, or litigation practices.
    • Develops relationships with HMIC agency force to better ensure excellent customer service for our policyholders.
    • Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
    • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
    Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree is required.
    • Fifteen years minimum experience of increasing multi-line claims experience, with five years minimum in commercial casualty (premises liability, construction negligence, auto bodily injury, etc.) claims.
    • Prior leadership experience in a claim handling setting is preferred.
    • Associate in Claims (AIC), Associate in General Insurance (AINS), Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is required.
    • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication ability.
    • Effective customer service, organization, influence, critical thinking, conflict management, and teamwork skills.
    • Demonstrated self-motivation with the ability to plan, organize, and complete tasks independently without close supervision.
