Summary This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Lyndon Baines Johnson Library.

The incumbent performs non-professional, quasi-professional, and technical work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records.

The work encompasses the full range of archival support services. Responsibilities The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07.

If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Archives Technician, you will:

Provide written and oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, responding to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's broad range of archival holdings, in original or surrogate format, by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats.

Pull and refile records according to NARA policies and procedures. Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed.

Independently monitor the use of records by the public and address customer usage that threatens the safety of records or limits access.

Participate in the digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access following broad NARA guidance and procedures.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

A one-year probationary period may be required. Must successfully complete a background investigation.

Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.

Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more.

The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.

Specialized Experience for the GS-07 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-06 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:

Using judgement and analysis to determine the proper course of action and steps needed to accomplish an assignment; AND

Performing archival or related functions (Examples may include monitoring, pulling and refiling records, reference, arrangement and description, and/or holdings maintenance); AND Communicating and assisting various audiences.

Specialized Experience for the GS-06 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-05 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F): For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-06 level for 52 weeks.
