Job Description Summary:


  • The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular strives to the highest quality of professional education and training, and conduct cutting edge research in the areas of biochemistry, molecular genetics and genomics with a goal to better understand human disease. Additionally, the department continues to have a long and successful record in training undergraduate, master and graduate students at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
There is an immediate opening for a Research Associate position in the laboratory of Dr.

Mazumder's laboratory (The HIVE Lab) is involved in developing standards for bioinformatics communication via
BioCompute Objects, knowledge bases for glycoinformatics (
GlyGen), cancer research (
OncoMX,
BioMuta,
BioXpress) and microbiome analysis via the
GutFeeling Knowledge Base (GFKB
).

The position independently carries out research/development activities and deliverables of databases, data analysis tools, and web resources by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting, under general guidance from the Principal Investigator, Dr.

Raja Mazumder.

Using a certain degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position include making detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results.

This position compiles results and prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes. This role is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Working under general supervision, this position typically reports to a Principal Investigator.


Specific responsibilities include:


  • Research project coordination, development of web resources, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Maintaining documentation and interaction with stakeholders, collaborators, lab members, and community members.
  • Participating in testing, development, and maintenance of portals, bioinformatics software, algorithms, tools and workflows produced in the lab.
  • Creating reliable and informative reports to be used for stakeholders, collaborators, and lab members.
  • Use of SharePoint, GitHub, Slack and similar tools for communication and project management.
  • Coordinating meetings and assisting in the drafting of research project reports, proposals, publications, and presentation content.
  • Scheduling of tasks and followup meetings regarding progress with the stakeholders.
  • Helping with miscellaneous departmental duties and expectations
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Understanding of bioinformatics tools, biology and biological databases.
  • Experience in bioinformatics programming/scripting, web frameworks, database management and software testing (Python, MongoDB, HTML/CSS/Javascript).
  • Familiarity with machine learning.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics platforms/tools and biomedical data modeling.
  • Familiarity with the database structures, data dictionaries, BioCompute Objects, biomarkers, glycans, genes, proteins and other biomolecules.
  • Good communication skills and proficiency in academic writing.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint, GitHub, Slack and/or similar tools.

Typical Hiring Range
- $53, $75,348.30 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
