Description

FLEET MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

(FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT). This is an entry-level, skilled, full-time, non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Senior Mechanic. This employee performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks performing, diagnostics, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Entry level computer skills and knowledge of how to use diagnostic scan tools. provides routine preventative maintenance on, and general repairs to, City automotive and mechanical equipment. Applying knowledge of mechanical systems and using a variety of hand tools, machine tools, and specification charts and diagrams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Maintains vehicles and equipment through regular scheduled preventive maintenance programs.
Inspects electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems of vehicles and equipment; effects repairs as required.
Must be able to use computer diagnostic tools to effect repairs.
Must be able to read electrical diagrams for repairs.
Disassembles malfunctioning equipment and replaces or repairs parts, using mechanic's hand tools and portable power tools, for gasoline, diesel, and small engines.
Operates heavy equipment when assigned to other projects away from mechanic's shop, which may include a backhoe, bucket truck, dump truck, etc.
Perform field or service call repairs of vehicles and equipment.
maintains responsibility for keeping work area in a clean and safe operating condition at all times.
Maintains records, logs, and diagnostic reports of all vehicle and equipment repairs; learning the Mitchell Pro System to enter data of the performed repairs.
Must provide own tools for regular repairs, specialty tools and diagnostic equipment are provided by the city.

Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

Qualifications

High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required, with a minimum of three to five years of practical experience in vehicle and equipment diagnosis, wiring, and repair (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, specialized training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must have ASE Certifications or be able to obtain within first year. Must possess a valid TN State Commercial A OR B driver's license within 60 days following employment.

Has knowledge of the various equipment and machinery used in the performance of daily duties. Is very knowledgeable in repairing, maintaining, mending, and preserving vehicles and equipment. Has thorough knowledge of equipment and machinery, tools, supplies, and other related objects as applied to mechanical maintenance operations. Has the ability to follow and comprehend work orders assigned by the Senior Mechanic. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as co-workers, supervisor, other department personnel and the general public. Is able to use judgment and discretion in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Has the verbal ability to communicate with others and the mathematical ability to carry out needed calculations accurately and has good technical skills.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts with all departments, co-workers, and the general public.

Relationships with Others: Shares knowledge with supervisors and staff for mutual and City benefit. Contributes to maintaining high morale among all City employees. Develops and maintains cooperative and courteous relationships with department employees, staffers, and managers in other departments, representatives from organizations, and the public so as to maintain good will toward the City and to project a good City image. Tactfully and effectively handles requests, suggestions and complaints from other departments and persons in order to maintain good will within the City.
