    Job Description

    Assistant/

    Associate Professor:
    This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position responsible for contributing significantly to Stephen F. Austin State University's undergraduate and/or graduate programs through teaching, scholarship/creative accomplishment, and service. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the chair.

    Essential Job Functions

    Assistant/

    Associate Professor:

    • Performs an equivalent of twenty-four teaching load credits ( TLC ) for the combined fall and spring semesters; reduction of teaching load through reassignment of duties is possible under certain circumstances.
    • Engages in research/scholarly/creative and service activities at levels that are appropriate to faculty rank and departmental tenure/merit criteria.
    • Provides services to the university and the profession.
    • Participates in promotion review of lower-ranked faculty members within the department.
    • When tenured, participates in tenure review of candidates for tenure.
    • May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, advising, and thesis/dissertation supervision.
    Non-Essential Job Functions

    Assistant/

    Associate Professor:

    • May receive course load reassignment when assigned administrative duties in support of the department/college/university.
    • May receive course load reassignment when assigned to prepare course material during the first semester/year when included as part of initial contract.
    • May receive course load reassignment when approved to conduct research/scholarly/creative accomplishment and service which exceed normal expectations.
    • May supervise the work of student and/or graduate assistants.
    • May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.


    Assistant Professor:

    • Extensive knowledge in the field in which the individual will be teaching.
    • Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.

    • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

    Associate Professor:

    Physical Demands

    Required Education


    Assistant Professor:
    Terminal degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required. ABD candidates may be considered if PhD is earned prior to start date.


    Associate Professor:
    Terminal degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required.

    The rank of Assistant Professor is held by an individual who demonstrates the capability to produce research/scholarly/creative accomplishments, teach effectively, and provide service to the academic and general communities.


    The rank of Associate Professor is held by an individual with a proven record of research/scholarly/creative accomplishments, effective teaching, and service to the academic and general communities.

    The individual must demonstrate excellence in teaching and excellence in either research/scholarly/creative accomplishments or in service. An individual should have held the rank of Assistant Professor for at least three years.

    Austin State University, a member of The University of Texas System, invites applicants for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, beginning August 2024.

    This position is one of three new faculty hires across the college that will form part of an interdisciplinary cohort of community-engaged scholars.

    Students in the college are increasingly from historically underrepresented social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

    The search is a collaborative effort between criminal justice, sociology, and social work to bridge academic, student, and local populations.

    Candidates should demonstrate how their teaching, mentoring, research, and/or service engages underserved communities.


    This is an Assistant or Associate Professor rank position in the Criminal Justice program housed in the Department of Government.

    Specific areas of expertise are open.

    The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate courses, which might include Gender and Crime, Social Diversity and Crime, Criminal Justice Theory and Practice, and Victimology, in addition to courses they develop related to their areas of interest.

    The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence, the ability to establish a scholarly research agenda, interest in service and shared governance, and a commitment to community outreach and engagement.


    A PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field is required at the time of appointment; a JD will not be considered a substitute for a PhD.

    Standard teaching load is 4/4, with new hires receiving a reduced 3/3 course assignment during their first year. The college also provides startup, moving, and ongoing professional development funds for travel and research.

    This position is eligible for participation in the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ), subject to the position being full-time and at least 4 1⁄2 months in length, or the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
