Description

Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance.

Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites.

The messenger for the department of Pathology is responsible for the pick-up, distribution and delivery of various specimens within the labs and lab areas.

The individual is responsible for, but not limited to receiving and sorting of specimens for pre-analytical and clerical tasks, aliquoting of specimens, storage, etc.

The individual is able to receive and follow direct instructions and supervision from staff and shift supervisors. The messenger is expected to be able to recognize issues and problems and address them as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Pick up specimens. Able to correctly recognize sample pickup urgency (stat vs routine pick up) and act accordingly
Deliver specimens to lab areas. Obey scheduled route
Sort and receipt of specimens. Aliquot of specimens
Store and retrieve specimens as needed
Scan and log documents into L.I.S. as assigned
Acts as a representative of the department and the institution
Conform to all infection controls procedures
Keep a clean and wellorganized work area
Properly handle broken and leaky specimen containers in accordance with infectious disease guidelines and regulations
Perform other tasks under the direction of a Supervisor as required

Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED required
Basic computer skills
Prior experience with barcode scanning and printing, Pager/Beeper
Knowledge of Montefiore's policies and procedures

This position is located at the Moses campus in Laboratory Service. The hours are 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with alternate weekends.
