    Job Summary

    The Assistant Dean of Students for Student Engagement creates a dynamic student experience with staff who are dedicated to student development. The Assistant Dean creates and implements a vision, strategic direction and oversight for student leadership programs, fraternity and sorority life and student activities. Through these units the Assistant Dean will provide activities and programs that help cultivate a positive co-curricular program fostering student involvement, learning, and personal development for a diverse group of learners.

    The Assistant Dean will be expected to work with colleagues to create an engagement model grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development that reinforces UM-Flint's commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students and will assist with policies, standards, and goals for the department which are consistent with the mission and goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.

    Responsibilities*Campus Activities & Leadership Programming
    • Promote student learning and development through robust leadership programming that is developmentally and theoretically grounded and builds leadership skills and capacities from a student-development theory approach for varied student populations consistent with enrollment at the University of Michigan-Flint.
    • Coordinate, implements and provides oversight of leadership programs and workshops designed to support and develop student leaders and student organizations, as well as the assessment of these initiatives.
    • Oversee the Leadership Learning Community in conjunction with Housing & Residential Life.
    • Create a robust campus environment by managing and implementing co-curricular student engagement opportunities and traditions.
    • Oversee the registration and recognition of all student organizations including, but not limited to, organization compliance, training and development.
    Fraternity & Sorority Life
    • Provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive, vibrant sorority and fraternity community that enhances the student experience and fosters the development of each chapter within its founding values of scholarship, leadership, service, and community including advising three Fraternity and Sorority Life Councils and regular meetings with chapter Presidents.
    • Oversee the formal and informal recruitment and membership intake for fraternities and sororities, quality educational programs including, but not limited to, hazing, risk management and risk reduction.
    • Develop and implement short-term and long-range plans for fraternity and sorority life, including goals and priorities, assessment, and evaluation efforts, and enact strategies to achieve these priorities through the department, division, and university.
    • Serve as a liaison to international and national offices, chapter advisors, faculty advisors, alumni, and members of the university community.
    Administrative
    • Supervise full-time and temporary personnel including recruitment, hiring, training, daily supervision, and assessment of job performance.
    • Provide functional supervision for department Administrative Assistants.
    • Provide direct oversight for related budgets; including monitoring expenses, preparation and submission of the annual budget and long-term planning documents/proposals.
    • Assist with department assessment and annual reporting.
    • Serve as the primary user of third-party student organization software by managing system updates, user access and campus training.
    • Serve as a mandatory reporter (Cleary Act) and responsible employee (Title IX) and immediately report related incidents according to federal mandates and university policies. Report all incidents of hazing and participate in all related investigations.

    The Office of the Dean of Students is a versatile work environment that encompasses a myriad of responsibilities. Other duties not outlined in this job description may be assigned as needed.

    Required Qualifications*
    • Master's degree in related field
    • 5 or more years of post-master's degree experience working in higher education in areas such as student activities, fraternity and sorority life, leadership programs, residential life or other units focused on student growth and development.
    • 5 or more years of demonstrated supervisory experience and the ability to motivate and lead a team is required.
    • Experience in budgeting and financial management.
    • Knowledge of federal laws, including FERPA, Title IX, and ADA and best practices in student activities, fraternity and sorority life and leadership programs.
    • Strong understanding and commitment to issues of diversity and social justice.
    Work Schedule

    Hybrid: A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) may be available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.

    Background Screening
