- Train and Educate: Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate students, staff, and faculty on a variety of topics related to chemical hygiene, Hazard Communication, safe work practices, hazardous materials management, waste management, and emergency response. Ensure all employees understand and follow safety guidelines.
- Compliance Monitoring: Regularly assess workspaces, laboratories, and facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding chemical safety. Perform regular inspections and assist with departmental risk assessments.
- Safety Committee Chair: Organize and chair the Arts & Sciences Safety Committee to assure that meetings are taking place on a regular (monthly) basis and that safety concerns/issues are discussed and communicated to the Associate Dean of Faculty.
- Safety Equipment Inspection, Calibration, and/or Recertification: Schedule the annual recertification of Biology's biosafety cabinets, as well as the bi-annual calibration of the facility's fume hoods. Perform bi-annual surveys of departmental x-ray generating equipment. Maintain first aid and spill kits staged in Science Center labs. Oversee the weekly testing of the facility's safety showers, drench hoses, and eyewashes.
- Emergency Response Planning: Oversee Emergency Response plans for chemical spills, leaks, and accidents. Coordinate and conduct drills to prepare faculty and students for emergency situations. Act as the facility's primary Building Coordinator.
- Record-Keeping and Documentation: Maintain accurate records related to chemical inventory, Safety Data Sheets, incident and near-miss reports, and compliance documentation.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with the Science departments to ensure that safety measures and protocols are in place and being followed. Communicate and collaborate with regulatory agencies as necessary.
- Research and Stay Informed: Stay informed about new regulations, trends, and advancements in chemical safety. Implement necessary changes to protocols and procedures accordingly.
- Manage the Science Stockroom Suite: Supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the Science Stockroom, including the various chemical storage rooms, gas cylinder storage, and departmental supply storage. The Stockroom also serves as central receiving for the building.
- Manage the Stockroom Store Inventory: Procure, inventory, and dispense common consumables, ethanol, and acetone for use by any Science department via the Stockroom Store. Maintain a record of expenditures and departmental purchases for budgetary purposes.
- Waste Management: Coordinate and perform activities related to the College's waste management programs, including hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and universal waste. Assist and educate students and faculty in the proper storage, segregation, and labeling of hazardous waste.
- Package/Chemical Receipt and Distribution: In conjunction with the Science Stockroom Assistant, perform incoming chemical hazard assessments, receive, log/inventory, and distribute all incoming Science Center packages and chemicals.
- Onboarding and Offboarding: Work with incoming and outgoing faculty to assure that labs are properly managed from the start, and then properly decommissioned upon faculty departure.
- Supervise: Directly supervise the Science Stockroom Assistant and student workers.
- Manage Science Center Work Orders: Act as the liaison between Science Center employees and Facilities Management for facility-related issues. Submit and track work orders to ensure issues are satisfactorily resolved in a timely manner.
- Manage Science Center Signage Updates: Work with departmental chairs and outside vendors for the annual update of Science Center directories, nameplates, and room signage.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field with proven experience in chemical safety, handling, and management within a laboratory or industrial setting
- Necessary credentials/certifications—40-hour HAZWOPER, Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO)
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to chemical safety (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.), as well as other physical, biological and radiological lab hazards
- Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively train and guide faculty, staff, and students on safety protocols and procedures
- Analytical-thinking and problem-solving skills for risk assessment and management
- Experience with spreadsheets, budget management, and purchasing, and strong organizational and computer skills, including the demonstrated ability to learn new applications

Description:
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Protection, Safety & Sustainability, the Lab Safety & Materials Manager primarily serves as the lab safety liaison for six of the seven academic science departments (Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Physics, and Psychology) in Hamilton College's Taylor Science Center to facilitate compliance with 29CFR and the college's Chemical Hygiene Plan. This position is also responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Science Center's Central Stockroom as well as managing facility-related issues
This is an exempt position with a pay range of $65,000 - $80,000.
