Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant-Department of Surgery
The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant (PA) provides advanced nursing care in the acute care setting, based on educational preparation and/or certification in the APN role to a specific patient population.
The APN assumes the management of patients, functioning in both an independent and collaborative role with the physician, case manager, and other members of the health care team.
The APN facilitates the transition of patients between service units and provides/coordinates complex patient and family teaching.Ensures that care delivered to patients, meets/exceeds standards of care and is provided according to Loyola University Medical Centers mission, strategic plans and all internal/external regulations, policies and procedures.
Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families or groups.Evaluates the health status, acute episodes of illness, and health care needs of individuals through emphasis on comprehensive history, physical exam, and psychosocial assessment.
Analyzes data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, identifies variations from the norm in diagnoses emergent problems and complications.
Demonstrates and maintains expertise in the performance of selected complex invasive procedures. Coordinates care for optimal continuity of care across the health care continuum. Facilitates patient/family participation in health care by identifying learning needs and providing specialized education to enhance decision making.
