    Description
    Overview of Position: Residential Counselor provides direct support to people served in the Community Living Program, offering access the community, to make friends, to have fun and to be as self-sufficient as possible. Provide support to people in group home settings, in recreational settings or in the community. This support may include personal hygiene or social and recreational assistance. To enhance the ability of the participant(s) to lead a self-directed life by providing the support, guidance, and information necessary to build self-esteem, confidence, assertiveness, and to make decisions.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Provide person-centered supports by assisting adults through respectful listening which leads to actions, resulting in people who have positive control over the life they desire and find satisfying, recognize and value people's contributions (current and potential) to their communities, and support people in their web of relationships personal, paid or within their communities.
    • Knowing and identifying what is important TO a person that includes those things in life which helps one to be satisfied, content, comforted and happy and well as important FOR with respect to issues in health, safety and what others see as necessary to help the person.
    • Acknowledging and moving people from "service life" to "community life" while focusing on connections, building relationships, promoting self-advocacy and natural supports.
    • Influencing change that results in positive differences in the lives of people who uses services.
    • Acknowledging the important of environments that are "power over" (toxic and tolerated) verus "power with" (supportive and healing).
    • A promise to listen (what is being said and to what is meant by what is being said), act on what you hear (always find something that can be done in the moment or the next day) and to be honest (letting people know that what they are telling us may take time or when we do not know how to help them get what they are asking for and what the person is telling us is in conflict with staying healthy or safe and we have to explore ways to balance what's important TO and important FOR.
    • Identify areas that work/make sense (information that is used to build on things that should remain the same and areas that do not make sense (information that is used to build on things that need to change.
    • Ensure that hygiene care is provided with the utmost dignity and respect to ensure the comfort and safety of the person.
    • Establish open communication with families, other providers etc. to ensure proper dissemination of information that is timely, respectful and to the benefit of the person.
    • Report all incidents according to Ardmore's Incident Reporting policy and procedures.
    • Support the maintenance and operation of the program (i.e., cleaning, trash removal, preparing nutritious snacks) while assuring proper engagement and supervision.
    • Encourage healthy food choices. Follow diet when indicated in doctor's orders or best support the person when decisions are not as favorable for the person.
    • Continuously gather information through learning logs that leads to a deeper understanding of the person in order for the information to show values to others needing to support the person today and in the future.
    • Encourage exercise in general.
    • Assess, communicate, and document changes in health status to supervisor
    • Implement and document data and progress made toward meeting the persons supported goals in their Behavioral Support Plan (if applicable)
    • Maintain written communication (i.e., daily logs, fire-drill logs, behavioral data [if applicable], medication logs, etc.)
    • Participate in and document fire drills and other activities that support health and safety
    • Promptly and actively participate in required training and professional development opportunities.
    • Model current and appropriate language when referring to Ardmore services and those who are utilizing its services.
    • Demonstrate a strong understanding and dedication to Ardmore's mission. Actively promote and represent the organization's philosophy through all interactions with both internal and external contacts.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned necessary to fulfill the mission of Ardmore.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • High School diploma required with some college experience preferred.
    • Must have a valid driver's license and daily access to reliable personal transportation, as necessary, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position.
    • Must believe everyone can work.
    • Must be able understand and effectively manage the physical, emotional and cognitive needs of the people that you work with.
    • Must have excellent time management and customer service skills. Strong ability to think creatively and develop strong internal and external relationships and resources is required.
    • Knowledge of ASL strongly preferred.
    Required Conditions of Employment
    • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Must be able to bend, crouch, stoop and/or kneel.
    • Must be able to push, assist and transfer the weight of an average adult in and out of a wheelchair.
    • Must be able to stand for periods up to 3 hours in duration.
    • Must possess a good driving record.
    • Must possess access to a reliable vehicle to transport people who Ardmore supports.
    • Must meet eligibility for employment in the United States. (Provide appropriate I-9 documentation on first day of employment).
    • Must have a clean criminal history record.
    • Must be able to pass a drug screening.
    • Must be or willing to become: Medication Certified in MD, CPR and First Aid certified.
