- Entry Level Police Officer refers to a candidate with no previous law enforcement experience or those who completed a self-sponsored academy without prior work as a commissioned officer/deputy for a law enforcement agency.
- Exceptional Entry Police Officer describes a candidate who has successfully completed a basic law enforcement academy and FTO, but lacks the required 24 months of full-time service as a law enforcement officer in the last 36 months to qualify as a lateral applicant. Exceptional Entry Police Officer candidates need to undergo testing with the entry-level candidates and cannot take the Lateral entry exam. They must inform the Police Exams Administrator via email upon application completion.
- Ensure public safety by upholding order, responding to emergencies, safeguarding individuals and assets, enforcing laws, and fostering positive community relations. Explains laws and police procedures to residents.
- Operate a patrol car, survey city streets, areas, and businesses to prevent criminal activities and enhance public safety.
- Investigate hazardous conditions to life or property; conduct initial crime investigations and may assist detectives in criminal inquiries. Conduct search and seizure activities as needed. Collect and preserve crime scene evidence.
- Apprehend suspected law violators. Review incident details to determine any criminal acts or violations.
- Document incidents and activities by preparing detailed reports.
- Provide assistance to accident victims and individuals in need of first aid for physical injuries.
- Transport individuals in custody.
- Present evidence and testimony in legal settings. Police services in Seattle are available 24/7, necessitating shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Minimum age of twenty and a half years.
- U.S. citizenship, OR legal permanent residency in the U.S.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- No dishonorable discharge from military service. All eligibility standards must be met before participating in the exam process.
- No marijuana use within the last twelve (12) months before the civil service exam, and
• - No cocaine or crack use in the past five (5) years, and
- No club drugs use within the past three (3) years, such as Ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, or MDMA, and
- No hallucinogens, LSD, Mushrooms, or Psylocybin use in the past five (5) years, and
- No PCP, Angel Dust, Wet or Phencyclidine use in the past five (5) years, and
- No Opium, Morphine, or Heroin use in the past five (5) years, and
- No Methamphetamine, Crank, Crystal, Ice, Speed, Glass, or Amphetamine use in the past five (5) years, and
- No inhalants, referred to as Huffing (paint) or Whippits (Nitrous Oxide) use in the past five (5) years, and
- No illegal drug use during employment in law enforcement, and
- No manufacturing or distribution of illegal drugs.
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Reckless Driving, or Hit & Run.
- Driver's license suspension within five (5) years of the exam.
- Three (3) or more moving violations within five (5) years will be reviewed.
- Two (2) or more accidents within five (5) years, with candidate at fault or charged, are considered.
- Any adult felony conviction.
- Any misdemeanor or felony convictions during law enforcement employment.
- Domestic violence convictions.
- Non-payment of income tax or child support.

The Seattle Police Department is looking for individuals dedicated to understanding and safeguarding the moral, cultural, and ethnic principles of the City of Seattle and its residents as Police Officers.
As front-line responders, Police Officers play a crucial role in public safety, carrying out essential police duties under standard supervision following the mission, goals, and objectives of the City of Seattle Police Department and in compliance with relevant laws at federal, state, and local levels.

All candidates must maintain a professional look continually. SPD determines professional appearance criteria for Police Officer roles. All tattoos, branding, voluntary disfigurement, or scarification will be reviewed individually.
A valid Washington State Driver's License is required before employment. Proficiency in typing at least 35 words per minute is highly desirable.
Seattle residency is not obligatory for application or employment. Offers depend on credit, criminal, and driving history checks, and verification of provided information. Medical, psychological, and polygraph assessments happen post-conditional offer.
