Director of the Tuttle School


DIRECTLY SUPERVISES:
None


STATUS:
Salary, 40 hours/week, Teacher Contract


JOB SUMMARY:

The Life Zones Teacher has the responsibility of providing in-depth knowledge of Life Skills, learning activities, and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, and the best teaching practices for special education students with learning differences.

This position will play a critical role in partnering with the Tuttle School Director.


DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES (Including Physical Function)

  • Commitment to Briarwood's mission, purpose, and culture
  • Strive to inspire a love of the field of study in students.
  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support special education students and teachers in their efforts to advance students with learning differences.
  • Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and assess their learning strengths and challenges.
  • Direct oneonone or smallgroup instruction.
  • Prepare lesson plans according to Unique Learning System (ULS) curricular assessment guidelines.
  • Document progress, assist goals for students
  • Plan and teach appropriate instructional strategies as designed by ULS curricular.
  • Conduct ULS Benchmark assessments of students and use results to establish annual goals and instructional activities.
  • Supervising classes to ensure all students are learning in a safe and productive environment.
  • Organizing supplies and resources, including shopping for all the homeroom classes and conduct a cooking activity one or twice a week.
  • Delivering personalized instruction to each student by encouraging interactive learning.
  • Planning and implementing educational activities and events.
  • Ensuring your classroom is clean and orderly.
  • Attending parentteacher meetings.
  • Evaluating and documenting students' progress.
  • Work with the children on selfhelp and grooming skills.
  • Present and develop ageappropriate adolescent puberty lessons.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies in the classroom including but not limited to: Emergency drills and behavioral outbursts.
  • Proficient in collecting data to establish strengths, needs and goals for specially designed instruction based on assessment results.
  • Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of Briarwood and Tuttle School.
  • Sponsor for Student Council for the Tuttle School Student Council, coordinate events and activities during the school year.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with positive behavioral supports and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in the staff development program opportunities.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
  • Work with parents, faculty, and division heads when academic concerns arise regarding students.
  • Implement a focus on technology use and adoption within the School.
  • Represent the school at educational conferences and associations.
  • Participate in any accreditation process for the school.
  • Attend all staff meetings and staff retreats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Tuttle School or the Head of School.

Education:
Bachelor's Degree, Teacher Certificate, with a Specialty in Special Education or Equivalent, CPI training, Bus and Van Training


Experience:


  • Experience in independent schools, with a strong background in Special Education
  • Exceptionally capable in both written and oral communication
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Technologically savvy
  • Proven success at working collaboratively
  • Passionate about the chosen field of study

Maintain physical ability to complete all essential functions and activities of the position.
